El Hospital de Dénia and of Molina, both of Ribera Sanitary Group, have recently met in practical training on radiofrequency fibroid ablation; a fast, safe and easy technique to improve the quality of life of patients.
This is the second time that this training is organized in which teams from both hospitals participate. "A few months ago the colleagues from Dénia went to Molina de Segura to make a first approach to the technique. Now, we have gone to perfect it", explained the Dr. Esperanza Gadea, Head of Gynecology at Ribera Hospital de Molina and specialist in the technique.
Radiofrequency transvaginal ablation is a technique that is helping many women, since approximately 70% develop fibroids, the highest incidence of which occurs from the 50 years and, although they are normally asymptomatic, in 25% of cases they can cause bleeding, pelvic pressure, pain and sterility or abortions.
Fibroids are benign tumors – their degree of malignancy is less than 1% – that originate in the muscle tissue of the uterus. Its treatment by means of radiofrequency ablation is an alternative to surgery and is minimally invasive, since it acts directly inside the fibroid, thermocoagulating the tissue through a fine needle that emits radiofrequency at its tip, always in a controlled manner, in the fibroid and without damaging the rest of the uterus. In this way, the fibroid decreases its size and also its symptoms.
In addition, being a non-surgical technique, it does not damage the endometrium, which is very positive for the reproduction of women, avoiding subsequent caesarean sections. Likewise, the operating room and subsequent complications and length of stay are avoided.
