The Dénia Hospital donates crystalline penicillin to a hospital in Honduras to combat Neonatal Syphilis

August 28 from 2023 - 11: 44

El Hospital de Dénia, from the Ribera health group, has donated 500 vials, of two million units each, with crystalline penicillin to the Hospital del Sur de Choluteca, in Honduras, to treat the Congenital Neonatal Syphilis, which affects almost one in every thousand newborns in the Central American country. The antibiotic will leave Spain this week, in a mission led by the former Head of the Pediatric Service of the Dianense center, Dr Luis Santos, in collaboration with the Children's Health Foundation of Elche.

The donation, made by the Pharmacy Service of the Dénia Hospital and coordinated by the Dr. Jaime Poquet, will serve to treat more than a thousand children with Congenital syphilis diagnosed. The infection, which is transmitted from mother to child during childbirth, is a public health problem in Honduras due to the shortage of the antibiotic in the country. Crystalline penicillin is a treatment that, throughout history, has been shown to be the most effective tool to treat, control and even eradicate the pathology.

The initiative is a sign of the commitment of the Hospital de Dénia and Ribera healthcare group with the health and well-being of the most vulnerable communities.
