Dénia remembers the gypsies who were imprisoned in the Castle during the 'Great Raid' of 1749

30 July 1749 Wednesday. Between 9.000 and 12.000 people of all ages were arrested that night.

The gypsies captured in the Kingdom of Valencia (and some from neighboring provinces) received different treatment according to their gender and age: men and boys over 7 years of age were sent to the castle from Santa Barbara of Alicante; while women, girls and boys under 7 years of age were imprisoned in the castle of Denia.

More than 250 years after that persecution, the city of Denia, together with the Autonomous Federation of Gypsy Associations (FAGA) of the Valencian Community, gathered in the Castle to remember the persecuted.

The act began with the reception to the representatives and members of FAGA in the City council of Denia by the mayor, Vicent Grimalt, The deputy mayor, Rafa Carrió, And other councilors of the municipal corporation. After signing in the honor book of the city and receiving a diploma in memory of his visit, the delegation moved to the castle, where a guided tour of the site took place.
