On Thursday, February 1, at 8:30 a.m., the Marine and Fisheries Environmental Service of the City Council of Dénia received notice of the presence of a dolphin floating in Marines, right in front of the beach Els Molins. It is a striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) of 1,85 meters in length. A big juvenile, according to the technicians of the Universitat de València.
The Coastguard service moved to the area and loaded the dolphin in his boat to transfer it to the port of Dénia, where they notified the University of Valencia and the Department of the Environment. A technician traveled to Dénia to transfer the dolphin to València, where the necropsy that will establish the causes of death will be performed.
The death of cetaceans or sea turtles in our waters is common after winter storms. Keep in mind that the coast of Denia is the most frequented by different species of cetaceans throughout the year, hence the number of strandings is also high.
From the Marine Environmental Service remember that, if someone finds stranded or sick, do not touch it, because being mammals can transmit viruses. They should call the 112 and it will start the stranding protocol so that the technicians can move to the point where the animal is.
