Pictograms to bring the holidays closer: Dénia is committed to a more inclusive Moors and Christians celebration

August 04 from 2023 - 10: 23

The municipal Library of Dénia was the space for the presentation of the new proposal to make some parties of Moors and Christians more inclusive, yesterday, Thursday August 3. The Councilor for Equality and Inclusive Policies, Javier Scotto, together with the president of FEMMICC of Dénia, Sonia Pérez, and the head of studies of the Raquel Payá Special Education Center, Carla Marí, explained the function and intention of the pictograms to bring the party closer to people with cognitive diversity and/or visual through billboards and inclusive programming.

The councilor stressed that this initiative is aimed at people with visual difficulties, cognitive diversity, the elderly, reading difficulties and "all of society in general", seeking to "remove obstacles so that the party is understood, recognized and integrated by people with diversity. Scotto explained that pictograms are found in our daily lives on elements such as traffic signs and help us understand the information in a simple way. He also highlighted the commitment of FEMMICC and the collaboration of the CEE Raquel Payá in the project.

For her part, the president of FEMMICC Dénia thanked Scotto for his commitment to this "pioneering project" and the revision of the pictograms in Raquel Payá. Pérez spoke of a party that, despite its 43-year history in the municipality, "evolves in events and issues as important as equality and diversity." He also expressed the desire to export the project to other municipalities "so that everyone can experience the party without any limitations."

Carla Marí was in charge of explaining the dynamics of the project from the didactic point of view. The teacher and head of studies explained that the images help to understand even if you do not know the language or have comprehension problems. In the same way, she appreciated that all people are included in the parties through "small steps", since, she affirms, inclusion should not be limited only to school, but should extend to other areas and spaces.

The councilor announced that the pictograms will also be included in the Fallas and patron saint festivities, as has already been done with the signs of municipal facilities.
