The American choreographer and dancer Merce Cunningham became, at the beginning of the XXth century, one of the main figures of conceptual art. Cunningham definitively broke with the heritage of Martha Graham, the other great figure of contemporary American dance, and, rebound, with many of the traditional elements of traditional choreographic language, such as frontality, the characterization of costumes and coordination with music.
On the 100th anniversary of his birth, the Marina Alta, through groups and institutions such as the Riurau Film Festival, Grup de Reüll, Choreographic Center of Dénia, La Figuera Collective y Raw Productions, pays homage to this important figure of dance, unique and visionary.
For this they start from the experience of the dancer and plastic artist China Moon Laudisio, born in Dénia, who between 1993 and 1997 worked in the company of Cunningham. Thus, for the next year, a series of activities that include conferences, a performance and an exhibition in homage to the choreographer have been programmed.
The La Figuera Collective, together with Joan Bernat Pineda, of the Dénia Choreographic Center, prepares a performance which will complement the conference cycle talk of the Grup de Reüll with which the next 16 will be honored to the choreographer of April 2019. On the other hand, from the Colectivo la Figuera there is also an exhibition for Cunningham that will be curated by Anna Perles, director of the Escola de Cinema Riurau, for spring / summer, which will be located at the Center d'Art The pati Jesus Pobre.
As to conference cycle of the Grup de Reüll, the artist Isabel Robles explained that it adds to the anniversary of Merce Cunningham. In this same line, by the Riurau Film Festival, Isabel Bilbao highlighted the involvement of a festival with dance through the section of dance film, in which this year was screened Melange, a well-known work by the New York choreographer. Also, in the next edition of 2019 will also be scheduled work of Cunningam given the centenary of the artist.
From the organization have stressed that the number of dance that will take place in April with the conference will be broadcast thanks to the collaboration of Raw Productions. Its head, Rubén Díaz de Greñu, explained that the trials of the intervention will also be recorded. An ephemeral fact that is twinned with the visionary discourse of Cunningham and at the same time with his global work: a patrimony of the dance that the High Navy will commemorate from all these slopes.
