The general director of Local Administration, Antoni Such, has visited Dénia to check in situ the result of the restoration works of the Verger Alt and the eastern bastion of the castle, co-financed by the Dénia City Council and the Generalitat Valenciana within the FEDER 2014-2020 operational program. The cost of the performance is around half a million euros.
The restoration of the Verger Alt and the eastern bastion have brought to life an area of the fortress with significant elements, such as the Torre del Mig from the XNUMXth century, the bastion or the knight (Renaissance military architectures, mid-XNUMXth century), which For many years it has been closed for not meeting adequate security conditions for public visits, as recalled by the mayor of Dénia, Vicent Grimalt. Grimalt has thanked the supramunicipal administrations for granting this type of subsidy "Without which it would be impossible to carry out performances like that of Verger Alt".
Julián Esteban and Elisa Moliner, directors of the restoration project, recalled that the area of Verger Alt and the eastern bastion was until the performance a large pine forest, planted in the second half of the last century, which covered the surface and hid it from view the heritage wealth of the whole. Thus, the first step of the restoration works was the felling of the trees, which led to the phase of archaeological excavations. The results and analysis of the excavations will soon be reflected in the information panels scattered around this area of the castle, which will help visitors to contextualize and identify the elements of the route.
A route that, as Julián Esteban has pointed out, is planned to be circular, going down the ramp in steps to the archaeological sites, continuing through the Torre del Mig, with incredible views over the city's port, to continue on foot through the walkway or coastal path, along which a safety railing has been installed, and leaving through the access portal, also restored. Elisa Moliner wanted to highlight that with acting "We have gained him almost 2.000 meters in the castle that before were not accessible and that now can be covered".
The municipal archaeologist, Josep Antoni Gisbert, explained that the Verger Alt is an area "That keeps a treasure of archaeological information" that goes from the origin and the uses of the promontory of the Dénia castle during the colonizations and the Iberians, passing through al-Àndalus, the late Middle Ages (XNUMXth century), when works were made that would transform the topography of the space and it was added in the Torre del Mig a body that forms a half circle, giving it the look we know today; the Renaissance and continues with traces of the War of Succession and the War of the French, until reaching the XNUMXth century, with the incorporation of the fortress to the municipal heritage.
Gisbert recalled that the Verger Alt restoration project was commissioned to recover and enhance the Renaissance architectures, "Since the criterion we are following is that in each spatial area of the castle there is a specific period in the history of the monument".
The general director of Local Administration, Antoni Such, has highlighted the importance that these aid funds of the Feder operational program, which the Generalitat Valenciana has distributed among the populations of the Region, have for the recovery and enhancement of Valencian cultural heritage, and has announced that the second call for this aid program will come out during the second half of 2021.
