Dénia says goodbye to the painter who portrayed her: Antoni Mahiques Lattur dies

February 27 from 2024 - 10: 18

Antoni Mahiques Lattur was born in Dénia in 1948 and died last weekend. He dedicated his entire life to capturing the city in his paintings, in which rural, seafaring and urban landscapes predominate, which he admired.

One of his works remains in an unexpected place in the city, the City Hall, something that the mayor remembered Vicent Grimalt yesterday through his Facebook account. «This painting, which I see every day when I sit at the mayor's table, is one of the works of the Denier painter Antoni Mahiques Lattur: a representation of the Castle very characteristic of his style," commented the mayor.

"This weekend he has left us and perhaps, as happens so often, his departure invites us to discover or rediscover, from admiration, this great artist of our city," lamented Grimalt.

Lattur studied Drawing and Painting at the Higher School of Fine Arts of Valencia in 1966, obtaining a State Scholarship in 1969 and the Pension to paint in Granada in 1970, according to the Dictionary of Alicante Painters. But he was always linked to the Dianense town, which would be portrayed through paintings with pure colors and practically no perspective.

Furthermore, the artist used austere painting, without details in the forms and which was influenced by the Flauvist movement. Then it was Mahiques himself who would impact others, since in 1977 he became a founding member of the Dénia Cultural Athenaeum.

His works have been exhibited up to eleven times, such as at the Elia Gallery in Dénia in 1973, 1974 and 1975; or also at the Montgó Gallery in Dénia in 1977. One of his works also appeared on the cover of Josep Bertomeu Moll's book, Capvestre.

Among his achievements, Mahiques' works were recognized in the IX "senyera" Painting Prize of the Valencia City Council and the V and XI Provincial Painting Competition of San Juan de Alicante.
