This is how Dénia foresees the future for the Paris Pedrera-Camp Roig neighborhood: the works go out to tender

03 2024 April - 10: 14

On March 27, the Local Government Board of Dénia approved the tender to carry out the works of the redevelopment project on Sagunto Street. This project, financed with Next Generation EU Funds through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Generalitat Valenciana, has as its main objective to transform the road into a more pedestrian-friendly environment, with wide sidewalks and the incorporation of green areas.

The area of action is located in the neighborhood called Paris-Pedrera/Camp Roig, covering the section between Avenida de Alicante and Paseo Saladar, with an area of approximately 4.100 square meters. The total tender budget for this service amounts to 673.774,06 euros (VAT not included), and interested companies have the opportunity to submit their offers until April 17, 2024. It is estimated that The period for the execution of the works will be seven and a half months.

The background that has motivated this initiative lies in the need to commercially revitalize Sagunto Street, improving its services and creating wider and more pleasant passage spaces to increase the visibility of businesses. Currently, the narrowness of the sidewalks, with a width of 1,80 meters, makes pedestrian traffic difficult, aggravated by the presence of bank parking on both sides of the street. In addition, the lack of trees and rest areas limited to three benches at the ends of the street contribute to an uncomfortable experience for pedestrians.

With this measure, the government team seeks to promote local commerce and improve the quality of life of residents, betting on a comprehensive transformation that promotes sustainable mobility and the enjoyment of public space in the city.

The councilor of Territory, María Josep Ripoll, has stated that the main purpose of this project is "to make this commercial artery of the city more pleasant." The objective of the Redevelopment of Sagunto Street is to improve the accessibility of the street, increase the space dedicated to pedestrians, providing the area with an improvement in trees and street furniture, so that areas of shade and rest are generated. for passersby. With all this, the objectives of this action are:

  • Facilitate commercial routes by providing wide passage areas and improving accessibility for all people.
  • Renew the underground street infrastructure, and connect the storm drains of the buildings under the sidewalks.
  • Incorporate trees to increase the climatic comfort of the street, eliminate atmospheric pollution and improve the urban image of the area.
  • Need to act not only to recover spaces for the community but also to benefit the environment.

A more accessible neighborhood

One of the main objectives of the redevelopment of Sagunto Street is to improve the accessibility of all people to public spaces. To achieve the objective, one of the main measures is the widening of sidewalks to three meters wide, improving pedestrian crossings, and the elimination of obstacles and architectural barriers for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, for example, for comply with current regulations.

Street parking will be converted into online parking, as was already done during the pandemic, and some spaces will be lost in favor of gaining a street that is greener, more pleasant, comfortable and walkable, without pedestrian obstacles. The streetlights currently installed will also be rearranged, until they are placed 50 cm from the edge of the sidewalk, which will in turn improve the accessibility of the street.

«A green street improves the quality of life»

"The planting of trees along the street is another of the pillars of the action, since a green street offers residents a better quality of life," according to Ripoll. A measure that, in addition to the environmental benefits that urban greenery brings, will improve the aesthetics of the complex and also the feeling of well-being of passers-by.

When choosing the species to be planted, the main aim will be to ensure that they adapt adequately to the characteristics of the climate of the area. With the planting of trees, we will seek to create shaded areas, so that they can be used by people and that they can enjoy these spaces.

At the street intersections, the construction of perimeter hedges has been planned, which in addition to serving to beautify the street, will serve to replace the current bollards. For this purpose, the planting of Viburnum Lucidum has been selected as a shrub to be placed in the aforementioned hedges. On the other hand, on the sidewalks itself, the planting of trees in tree pits measuring 1x2 meters is planned, in order to make the street more visually pleasant. The species selected for the plantation is the fruitless morus alba. However, the final species that will be planted throughout the area must be agreed upon with the personnel responsible for the gardening area of the Dénia City Council.

Renovation of urban furniture

The requirements for the layout of street furniture have also been taken into account, so that benches, litter bins, etc. comply with the requirements of current regulations.

The benches will be located in the widening of the sidewalks in the area next to the crossroads or intersections of the street, so that they serve as a rest area, and at the same time make it difficult, together with the planned flower beds, to cross the street obliquely. , leading pedestrians towards pedestrian crossings. They will be provided with armrests.

In addition, trash cans will be placed on the chamfers of the sidewalks, since given the characteristics of the urbanization it is not considered necessary to place more street furniture on them, which could even hinder pedestrian circulation.

As novelties, on the one hand, the installation of a water source is planned, which will be integrated into the environment in an easily accessible area, and will be connected to the drinking water network, so as to allow its consumption in public places. The intended source is an inclusive model adapted for all people. Another novelty is the placement of three bike racks in the different corners to promote the alternative use of this means of transport, which is more sustainable and efficient than the car.

Finally, the Territorio councilor commented that "it is also planned to install a new battery of underground containers, near Alicante Avenue, which will be added to the two existing ones."

Indeed...they talk about wider sidewalks when there are areas of the marinas where they do not exist and we risk it every day.
See, in front of the Maria Ibars institute or in front of the Daniya hotel. By the way we also pay taxes!!
