First contact between farmers and supermarkets within the framework of the Agrarian Council of Dénia

The Agrarian Council of Dénia met last Wednesday, April 17, and among the points discussed, two of the main demands of the farmers' associations were addressed, included in the motion of support for the sector that was approved by a majority in the Plenary Session of the City Council. of March. Firstly, in the agreement the council committed to promoting the implementation of sales channels for local products.

As an intermediary, in the Consell Agrari the City Council facilitated a first contact between the farmers' representatives and the president of ASUCOVA, the Association of Supermarkets of the Valencian Community, Pedro Reig, and the president of MasyMas, Jordi Fornés. Starting from this first meeting, new meetings will be called to study the possibility of introducing agricultural products from Dénia on supermarket shelves.

Regarding a second point of the motion, the possibility of reusing wastewater from the WWTP for irrigation, the Councilor for Agriculture, Sandra Gertrúdix, explained that the idea is to call specific meetings with those affected to assess possible options.

Visibility and signage of the agricultural area of ​​Dénia

At the proposal of the farmers, it was agreed to include in the drafting of the future PEDAS, Strategic Plan for Sustainable Agrarian Development of Dénia, in the contracting phase, a signage project for the local agricultural area that gives visibility to local agriculture and production. ; an initiative linked to the actions promoted by the UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and the future agricultural park that will be created on land of 35.000 square meters next to the greenway.

Taking advantage of the Agrarian Council meeting, the councilor explained the experimental agricultural park project, in which training will have an important weight. In this sense, farmers showed their interest in the possibilities of updating knowledge and techniques that this new space will offer them.

Sandra Gertrúdix also explained that the intention is to include in this project the creation of a seed bank of traditional varieties from the region of La Marina Alta.

This action goes hand in hand with another project that was explained to farmers yesterday: the Bancalet brand. From the Innovation Office they were advised on the operation and on how to request the accession of their products to this brand that makes local production visible.

La Unió (Unió de Llaurador i Ramaders, CR Pou Cau dels Teixons, Comunitat de Regants Torrecarrals, Riegos Montgó, AVA and Villa San José 1952) were represented at the Consell Agrari. Representatives from the Bancalet projects, Xarxa Agrícola also attended on behalf of the city council. of CREAMA and the School Gardens.

Finally, the issue of the periodicity of the calls of the Agrari Consell was addressed and those present agreed that they continue to be annual, with the call of extraordinary sessions if any matter requires it. On the other hand, representatives of the agricultural sector requested that the agreed issues be monitored and that they be kept promptly informed, a commitment assumed by the Department of Agriculture.
