The Director General of Fisheries Management, Carlos Larrañaga has sent a statement to Pòsit Denia, which warns of the presence of a toxic fish in Mediterranean waters. The species is Lagocepathus Scerelatus, this fish was caught in last July by a trawler of Dénia. The capture was sent to the University of Alicante for study.

Reports has referred the university indicate that it is a poisonous fish containing tetrodotoxin, a paralyzing toxin nervous system that constitutes danger for those who consume.

The Spanish Institute of Oceanography reported that this species entered the eastern Mediterranean through the Suez Canal, having been established and propagated affecting even to native populations of other species and fisheries.

Given this situation it is requested that appropriate action given the toxicity of this species to prevent their introduction in the marketing chain and notification is sent if a new finding, with the earliest opportunity to the General Secretariat of Fisheries are taken, that connected with the IEO in order to document the movements of the species in Spanish waters to establish better surveillance.
