Reflection in Dénia on the humanities in secondary education

26 October 2023 - 11: 34

This Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m. and within the program of parallel activities in Dénia Festival of the Humanities, a didactic day was held that brought together secondary education students and teachers in the Auditorium of the Social Center of Dénia.

The featured speaker of the day was Joseph Ramoneda, academic director of Dénia Festival de les Humanitats and editor of La Maleta de Portbou, who has given an inspiring conference on the importance of the humanities in current secondary education.

Ramoneda has addressed crucial issues that challenge young people on their educational path. What relationship do the humanities have with your personal development? What is the purpose of education? Should they prepare exclusively to find a job or also to live a full life? As Ramoneda himself has stated, "although it is true that the humanities do not guarantee a specific career, like science, medicine, law or economics, at least in appearance, they have invaluable value. These disciplines cultivate the ability to think critically and make autonomous decisions, essential to creating free citizens.

The message of the day has been clear: the humanities are much more than a set of academic subjects; They are a perspective that allows us to think for ourselves, differentiate ourselves as individuals, and ultimately be free citizens capable of positively contributing to society.
