Jessica Romero: "I am what I am because of my son Alberto"

08 March 2013 - 00: 02

They define it as a strong woman and a fighter. Dénia came to 14 years ago with the intention to raise some money to finance his studies in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and stayed here. He found love and started a family. Alberto 7 years ago he came to the world. Although he left the hospital apparently healthy, with 1 8 year and months, and after numerous tests, he was diagnosed with Pelizaeus Merzbacher, a so-called "rare disease" in Spain 8 children suffer. Moved by concern in improving the quality of life of his son, he joined with other mothers and created the LUDAI association, of which he is president.

After getting the association recognized as an Early Care Center, today, International Women's Day, Jessica Romero will be honored at the institutional act of the City of Dénia from the 13: 30 hours.

What is Alberto's current situation?

Now Alberto is doing private therapy. Come gastric button with special drugs. If you remove aid in pharmacy, you need between 2000 and 3000 euros per month for food, in addition to private therapies. I'm scared because I do not know how to deal with it. Orthopedics been taken away. His chair is worth 4.500 euros. My biggest concern is that.

What has meant that LUDAI is an Early Intervention Center?

The truth is that a very great satisfaction because before we focused on people the service we gave, but being an association they did not take us very seriously. But now with this change, being an authorized center, means very positive changes for us, despite the crisis. They are paying attention to us, more children are coming who need this service ... it's something else.

Your team is made only by women ...

We started with another mom, investigating how we could do to improve the quality of life of our children. Then Laura, other moms, the management team ... all women joined. We are making every effort to keep this growing as it touches.

Do you think that the fact that it is almost more a personal struggle, has to do with you being women who carry it forward?

The truth is that there are parents who are getting involved, but usually the mom is carrying the effort because the baby go ahead, dad is a support. The struggle and perseverance is the mother.
Here we have put together some very strong women to make this project.

Have you lived moment of weakness in this tough fight?

Yes ... you do it selflessly heart, but despite the hard times there is always an incentive that encourages you to keep going. We were about to close because we had no money. Unfortunately there was a boy who died, and his mother decided to give the money they had collected for their disease, so that LUDAI was able to continue. But now the situation is very critical. We have many grants.

You are an association that continues to do activities all year round Is You notice feedback from people?

The truth is that if. We are very happy in that sense because whenever we do any event, people collaborate. See the effort we make to continue.

What woman is a model for you?

My grandmother, who raised me. He is a person from whom I learned the importance of constancy in the fight, that if you go down that road you will get everything you want. Today, in recognition, I will remember especially my father and my son, who thanks to him I am what I am.

Today you are recognized on International Women's Day. How did you receive the news?

When Ana (the mayor) called me, I thought it was because of some kind of agreement, and when I told her I thought it was a joke. But Pepa Sivera I confirmed it. But I think ¿working woman? Work is, but here I do not charge, I do it for love and children, and for my son, because I see changes that make me believe that children need to be taken care of very young so that tomorrow is not difficult plus its disability.
