The Dénia City Council system for access to organic waste containers by card fails

14 September 2023 - 10: 52

It has been a year since the new Dénia garbage contract managed by URBASER began. A contract valued at more than 70 million euros and a duration of 10 years, which is a million and a half more annually than the previous one. However, after the first year the situation leaves much to be desired.

As reported Gent of Dénia During a press conference this Thursday, twelve months after the contract began, an endless number of deficiencies can be observed, and one can no longer look the other way. After the first six months of absence for the company to adapt to the new requirements, another six months later there are still large absences. For example, according to the training, there is still no gas plant for trucks, but not all the promised gas trucks are there either, and those that exist are used minimally due to the lack of the aforementioned plant. There is also a lack of trucks with cranes for belongings. New containers have been installed with a space that is too narrow and many people choose to leave the bags that do not fit outside, accumulating mountains of garbage in many parts of the city.

As for the underground containers, many of them remain inexplicably closed, sealed with a simple garbage bag. Containers out of service causing adjacent ones to overflow.

Card-operated containers for a card-free city

In these underground containers, the great novelty that was presented was one intended for organic waste. Now, the City Council opted for a closure that would only react to a card that the neighbors had to bring. Months after being installed, only 1.600 cards have been distributed throughout the municipality, despite the planned reach of 8.000. That is, 20% of the total, which Gent de Dénia attributes to a lack of publicity or not having listened to a supposed disagreement on the part of the neighbors.

And the lack of use of these containers becomes a problem, because according to the spokesperson for the training, mario vidalIf the container is not completely filled, the passing truck will not pick it up. Then, the organic waste left inside begins to generate a bad smell because it is not a watertight container, and the broth can leak into the subsoil.

The thing does not stop there, since Gent de Dénia affirms that there is a lack of staff to cover all the services provided, and some, like the very conceited environmental educators, act as foremen instead of fulfilling their duties. The position of the municipal technician who was in charge of controlling and monitoring compliance with the new contract has also remained vacant for six months.

The group has also criticized the lack of cleaning of the Dénia floors using pressurized water, which they claim is limited to Marqués de Campo "in the Condado area on Saturdays and Sunday mornings", and in the rest of the city "you can barely see them."

People from Dénia demand solutions

According to what they have been told, on September 7 there was a meeting between URBASER and the Department of Ecological Transition in which the company blamed the City Council for having drafted a contract that was difficult to execute.

"Dénia smells bad," Vidal criticizes. "Those of us who receive the bad service are the citizens of Dénia, and the tourists who have suffered a very ugly, very dirty and extremely smelly summer." The councilor asks that the contract that was signed be complied with, with the grace period already over and if not, renegotiate said contract and reduce the costs on the citizen.

  2. Joselito says:

The system does not fail, those who fail are the citizens who do not catch up with new technologies. Apparently only we progressives know how to appreciate the good work of our mayor. Thank you Vicent for trying to make our city a pioneer in cutting-edge technology.

    • José Luis says:

But what's the point of a garbage container being blocked?

      • Vicent says:

Because we live in Denia and we are cooler

        • José Luis says:

I don't understand the cool thing,? If in this container, the truck does not pick it up until it is full, and on the other hand the hatch is blocked, it will never be filled, and the bad odors will continue, urban waste must be recycled, citizens have nowhere to leave our waste, after paying for the collection of these services.

  3. Pillar says:

The problem is that the operators themselves do not realize that people cut the rubber of the containers and the smell comes out, that the yellow containers have 2 very small mouths and the bags do not fit and the "loafers" leave them on the ground; The mouth of the cardboard container is so small that people don't "cut the cardboard" either and they leave it on the ground and the organic waste is in the truck itself that has to be lifted with the crane for I don't know how many meters!!!! All the debris that DOES NOT FALL INTO THE TRUCK falls to the ground and is all rotten and smelly. That operator who goes alone should sweep up all the dirt that he leaves behind. He is one botch after another. But I better leave it for the complaint to the City Council because here we only let off steam.

  4. Maica says:

I have not used, nor will I use, the organic waste container with a card. Nor the others.

If they want me to recycle, they should pay me, like in developed countries. I'm not going to work for anyone for free. Recycling companies do business with garbage, and the raw materials are free.

Until then, like all my life. Everything in the same bag.

  5. Dénia is a ruin says:

This mayor has his face covered, all he does is benefit his friends and the town is turned into foxes. The garbage in Dénia is shameful, and if it were only that... You have to see how the Montgó is, you can't travel on the roads, the bushes and stubble eat up the road, the potholes continue, some with the margins full of rubbish, but according to them "everything wonderful."

  6. Richard says:

What a waste of OUR money! Why do people vote for these people.

    • Fernando says:

We have a pro-independence communist social council, the last priority is management. They know well that many voters will support them in the midst of so much disaster. Neither critical sense nor education to discern information from opinion. Spain my friend is like that.

    • Jopelin says:

Richard, don't be lazy and use Google translate.
What a waste of OUR money! Why do people vote for these people?
Having said this, I give you my complete reason in writing. But we must remember that the vote was taken on May 28 and the same votes came out again.
Having said this, I am completely right in writing. But we must remember that the vote was taken on May 28 and the same votes came out again.

  7. Dani says:

    Grimalt has to resign.
But the worst thing is whoever succeeds him will do the same.
This man has no civic sensitivity.
You just have to see where the money goes.
A CHAPUZA Bus Station, pedestrian streets causing traffic jams in the center, redeveloped parks or squares without fountains to cool off or shade, a Stock Fair in which the same people as always participate, there is no work and an Urban Plan to make more parks and Residential areas.
No job creation, no tourism promotion, no transportation improvement (there are barely any buses to go to the towns) and no citizen attention (complaints are not effective).
Right now we don't have a decent mayoral successor.
    Solution:
We citizens have to get together with neighborhood associations and propose a candidate for Mayor.

  8. M says:

    Denia smells like shit, sorry

  9. It says:

70 million Euros!, thank you City Council, thank you Mr. Grimalt, another "poof" of your management from which, without a doubt, some will have benefited by lining their pockets.
Denia continues to smell bad, thanks to terrible service and, meanwhile, citizens paying tremendously high garbage taxes, much higher than in large cities.
Shameful management again “at the service of the City and well-being”…. guard court
    ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

    • Dani says:

      Absolutely right.
This mayor is the worst mayor in years.
And the worst thing is who votes for him.

      • Voter says:

The citizens of Denia vote for him, a large number of progressives. Mr. Grimalt is the best mayor we have, thank you.

      • Renate says:
