Schoolchildren from Xara and Santa Gertrudis (Ibiza) learn marine sciences at MarLabUA-Dénia

19 2024 April - 10: 18

For three days, a group of more than 70 schoolchildren from CEIP Santa Gertrudis (Ibiza) and CEIP La Xara joined various training and scientific dissemination activities organized by the Marine Laboratory of the University of Alicante in Dénia (MarLabUA-Dénia) within the Marine Observatory project of the Marina Alta (THINKINAZUL/2021 /043).

On the first day they received talks on the scientific tasks carried out at MarLabUA-Dénia and held workshops on some of the tasks that are usually carried out. Among them, the identification of plankton species stands out, how a side-scan sonar works (to carry out a three-dimensional survey of the sea floor), learning how to report a sighting of jellyfish through
Medusapp application or the websites, use and handling of utensils for
sampling seawater at different depths, sensors of different types characterizing seawater, etc.

In the laboratory they were able to see real experiments, in this case with jellyfish and oysters, on the effect that microplastics and hydrocarbon pollution have.
