Hospital prepares for toughest flu vaccination campaign

The Pedreguer Health Center hosted this morning the presentation of the 2020-2021 Flu Vaccination Campaign at the Marina Alta. The event was attended by the mayor of the town, Sergi Ferrús; the Manager of the Dénia Health Department -DSD-, Luis Carretero; the Commissioner of the Ministry of Health, Juan Puig; the Director of Public Health Center from Dénia, Pascual Martí; the person in charge of public health prevention programs, María Gironés; the Head of Preventive Medicine of the DSD, Antonio Valdivia; the Director of Primary of the DSD, Antonio Barceló and the head of the basic area and coordinator of Nursing, Carolina Montesinos and Francisca Isabel Gregori, respectively.

The Dénia Health Department -DSD- will receive 10.000 additional doses for the 2020-2021 flu vaccination campaign, which began on Monday, October 5, and will last for the next 4 months, until January 31, 2021 .

In this edition, the DSD will receive 41.600 doses –trivalent and tetravalent- destined for the population of the Marina Alta, 10.000 more than in the previous year. In addition, this year the risk groups are also expanding.

Over 65 years old
People with chronic diseases
Essential public services
Professionals and residents in senior centers
Personnel of: health centers, pharmacies, nursing homes or centers for chronic patients, caregivers or home partners with people from risk groups
Pregnant women and women up to 6 months postpartum
Children with a history of prematurity, between 6 months and 2 years

Coverage objectives

The coverage objectives of this campaign are to administer the dose to 75% of people over 65 years of age and health and social-health workers. On the other hand, 60% of pregnant women, in puerperium and people with risk conditions should receive the vaccine.

Citation

The health authorities warn that, to avoid unnecessary crowds in health centers, it will be the professionals themselves who will contact the risk groups for the summons. With regard to health personnel, such as those in residences, vaccination will be carried out on site.

Campaign 2019-2020

In Spain, the 2019-2020 flu vaccination campaign avoided 26% of hospitalizations for this virus and 40% of admissions to the ICU. In fact, last year the flu caused 116 admissions to intensive care units only in the Valencian public health network. Most of the cases were patients older than 65 years.

With regard to data from the Valencian Community last year, 53% of those over 64 were vaccinated, while in the DSD the rate reached 58%. In addition, in the Marina Alta the degree of coverage of the health services personnel was close to 100%.
