El Hospital de Dénia has launched the new Unit of Obesity and Metabolic Surgery, a multidisciplinary group that brings together professionals of General and Digestive Surgery, Endocrinology and Dietetics, Medicine Digestive and Digestive Endoscopy, Anesthesia and Reanimation, Radiology, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Psychiatry and Psychology to treat patients suffering from obesity.
The Hospital de Dénia has been practicing Bariatric Surgery for a year, the set of surgical procedures used to treat obesity. During this time the results have been "excellent" and have generated high levels of patient satisfaction.
Two of the surgical techniques performed are vertical gastrectomy and gastric bypass. In both cases, access is minimally invasive, through the abdomen and through laparoscopy, so postoperative recovery is much better and faster. The goal is to reduce the size of the stomach so that the intake is lower due to the feeling of fullness, and in certain cases the absorption of nutrients is prevented due to the rapid and alternative passage of the digestive bolus.
