The Dénia Hospital develops a minimally invasive technique to remove lung nodules

06 March 2024 - 15: 23

El Hospital de Dénia This morning hosted a conference to address a multicenter study on the removal of lung nodules, using minimally invasive techniques. The study, led by the Dianense center, also includes the Doctor Balmis General Hospital of Alicante, the General University Hospital Consortium of Valencia, the Clínic of Barcelona, the Miguel Servet University Hospital of Zaragoza, the Virgen de la Arrixaca of Murcia and Son Espases of Mallorca.

The meeting, organized by the thoracic surgeon from the Dénia Hospital, José Alejandro González, brought together doctors from that specialty and interventional radiologists from different hospitals. The procedure, developed in Dénia, allows non-palpable lung nodules to be removed through uniportal surgery (a single small port).

Through prior marking of the nodule, using CT-guided puncture (Computerized Axial Tomography), a small metal marker is placed near the lesion, it is a 1mmx5mm metal seed.

Later, during the surgical intervention, a metal detector probe allows the nodule to be precisely located and removed endoscopically, without the need to make large incisions. This opens up new possibilities for the treatment of lung nodules, especially in those cases in which the location of the lesion makes its removal by conventional endoscopic means difficult.

The technique offers important benefits for patients, as it reduces postoperative pain, the risk of complications and improves recovery and aesthetic results.

In Spain, around 10.000 lung nodule resections are performed annually. The resection technique with prior marking using a metal seed offers a safer alternative.

When will the Radiotherapy Department arrive? Shameful to send cancer patients to Benidorm to be treated.
