Dénia joins VIOPET, the animal shelter program for victims of gender violence

The government team of the Dénia City Council (PSPV-Compromís) will present to the ordinary plenary session this April a proposal for the council to adhere to the VIOPET program. This is a project that emanates from the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, to temporarily shelter the pets of victims of sexist violence.

The main objective of the project is to intervene collaboratively with the Dénia Local Police (Artemis specialized unit) and the municipal Social Services, to guarantee the temporary shelter of pets in the possession of victims of gender violence and domestic violence. when the affected person does not have a safe place for their pet.

One of the determining factors in ending gender violence is assistance to the victim, such as in this particular case, caring for their pets in the process of leaving violence, given that many of them express their fear. to abandon their animals.

VIOPET works thanks to a network of volunteer homes to which the animals are moved until the victim's situation stabilizes. In the specific case of Dénia, the first option, as the program specifies, is to find a foster home for the animal. And if not, as collaborators with the City Council, the program includes the associations APAD and Aldea Felina, which will reserve places in their shelters if necessary.

In addition to requesting membership in the VIOPET program, the City Council is committed to carrying out actions to raise awareness about this problem and publicize the program, in addition to coordinating, together with the General Directorate of Animal Rights, training activities for public workers. in sectors related to care for victims of gender violence.

On the other hand, the action protocols of the Social Services and Local Police area will include taking into consideration cases in which there were animals in the care of the victims, thus providing a new municipal resource for cases of violence. of gender that could occur in the municipality of Dénia.
