Red flag in Les Deveses after the sighting of a Portuguese caravel in Dénia

26 June 2018 - 13: 29

The feared Portuguese caravel has arrived in Dénia. Yesterday, Monday, a specimen was sighted on the beach of Les Deveses, which forced the red flag to fly on this beach in the north of the city.

The specimen was taken out of the water without causing stings, but the beach was closed as a precaution, and will remain at least until the 15: 00 hours on Tuesday.

The councilor of beaches, Óscar Mengual, has confirmed that the Red Cross maritime rescue vessels are combing the area of the sighting, and at the moment no more specimens have been sighted.

Portuguese caravel

The Portuguese caravel (Physalia physalis), is a false jellyfish whose tentacles can measure up to 50 meters, capable of paralyzing a large fish and seriously damaging a human being. Dénia is not the first beach in the region that closes because of this sighting. Weeks ago, beaches were closed in Calp, Benissa and Teulada Moraira.
