"Allies of citizens in the most diverse situations": 150 years of Local Police in Dénia

20 December 2023 - 14: 55

The Mayor of Dénia, Vicent Grimalt, the councilor for Citizen Protection, Javier Scotto, the chief mayor of the Local Police, Jovi Estruch, and other members of the corporation, have presided over the event celebrating the Local Police Day of Dénia that was held today, December 20 in the Multiespai l'Androna room in the maritime station from Dénia. The event was presented by local police officers David Jiménez Moncho and Cristina Carbonell Uribe.

"This year we celebrate a special anniversary, as it marks 150 years since the creation of this body," said Jovi Estruch. It was on December 20, 1873, when the Plenary Session of the Dénia City Council agreed to the creation of the Municipal Guard Corps, which was originally made up of eight municipal police officers under the command of a corporal who was the head of the body, and which was born with the objective of maintaining order and enforcing the guidelines emanating from authority. For Vicent Grimalt, «turning 150 years is a great milestone for any institution. But in the case of the Local Police, the history of the force is very closely linked to the evolution of this city, to the changing needs of society, to the political pulse, even military, of each era.

Estruch explained that, since 1873, the Local Police force has evolved and changed a lot, exceeding one hundred personnel, expanding its powers and creating different specialties in order to respond to the needs that arise within society. "The consolidation of democracy and the strengthening of municipalism have changed the priorities of the police, turning them into security agents and, above all, agents of coexistence and civility," said the mayor of Dénia, who added, " the administration closest to the citizens, the city councils, we have in our workers in general, and in the local police, in particular, the true ambassadors of the concept of public service. At street level, you, police officers of the city of Dénia, allies and support of the citizens in the most diverse situations.

The chief mayor has highlighted that in addition "this year, 2023, has been a year of changes and intense work, since at an organic level, the staff has increased, with the incorporation of 14 agents, of which 9 of them will sign as career civil servant agents after passing a selective process. This has allowed us to face the summer season with solvency and reinforce the citizen security and downtown operational groups. "We have reorganized work shifts to enhance police presence on weekends and holidays." "The incorporation of new agents," is for Javier Scotto, "an opportunity to continue improving the operation of the service we offer, as well as more instruments to modernize the body and fleet of vehicles so that you can perform your functions as best as possible."

The objectives of the Local Police are "in the short term to promote the continuous training of the workforce, and to consolidate the functions of administrative police, in terms of monitoring compliance with Municipal Ordinances and Regulations", according to Jovi Estruch. "In the medium and long term, we intend to modernize the work system by implementing operating systems in the PDAs that we already have, to digitize ordinary work procedures," continued the chief mayor, and "also commit to the Smart City Project , with the implementation of video surveillance cameras that will contribute to making Dénia safer.

As Javier Scotto has indicated, "let us not forget the social complexity that requires a multidisciplinary local police, with continuous challenges such as traffic safety, crime, incivility, social inequality, social networks, vandalism, violence gender, school absenteeism, the exaltation of hatred, mediation or neighborhood annoyances themselves. From prevention to reporting, from citizen assistance to sanction, the local police of Dénia are always present in the resolution of the conflict and above all in the maintenance of social peace. The councilor highlighted that "a Local Police like that of Dénia, is the Local Police that has made history during these 150 years and that also aspires to continue writing its history."

Vicent Grimalt has thanked and congratulated the Dénia Local Police for their work, for their loyalty and for the support they offer to citizens, such as the fight against gender violence, and in favor of real and effective equality between men and women; specific training in hate crimes and discrimination; mediation; work in schools. «You are allies and support of citizens and over the last decade this perception of your role has deeply penetrated the people you serve and we serve. Therefore, once again this year, we take advantage of this day to say thank you for the devotion you put into your profession," the mayor concluded.

Decorations for volunteering

Jovi Estruch has valued the work of the Civil Protection Volunteer Group of Dénia, and "of all those people, entities and associations that selflessly collaborate with this Police, since their help is sometimes essential when it comes to achieving objectives or resolve situations we face.
Javier Ygarza Fernández, coordinator of the Volunteer Group, received the medal from Javier Scotto. On the other hand, we wanted to recognize the effort, predisposition and collaboration of the Dénia Civil Protection Volunteer Group, awarding the ANAV medal, in the bronze category with a white badge "for its seniority, merit and perseverance." , to the volunteers David Roland and Jorge Vázquez.

In addition, the mayor has appointed volunteer Rosa Martínez Marí as Head of the Group, who will thus fill the vacant position. Martínez has been a volunteer since November 2, 2015, being one of the most senior volunteers of the Group, holding the position of Sub-corporal since November 2020. She coordinates and directs the group in the absence of the Coordinator, and has proven her validity and leadership capacity when facing operations and organizing volunteers.
