President Pedro Sanchez announced this Friday that next April 28 national elections will be held. A date expected by many after he failed to get the budgets in Congress. And a date in a complicated year in which local and regional elections will also be held, in this case the May 26.
After knowing the announcement of Sanchez, we have polled the opinion of the spokesmen of the different political groups that currently make up the City of Dénia and that go beyond local borders on how this date can affect municipal voting.
The current mayor of Dénia, and officially mayoral candidate for the PSPV-PSOE, Vicent Grimalt, consider that it is «una fecha muy cercana a las elecciones municipales y autonómicas» but what «se ha de hacer cuando antes mejor». En opinión de Grimalt, esta fecha «no puede venir mal al PSPV» para «que se despeje una cuestión antes de las nuestras», en referencia al panorama político. En cuanto al resultado de los comicios generales, Grimalt no se aventura a pronosticar nada, pero su voluntad pasa por Sánchez «y que pueda gobernar la izquierda», and especially «que no se repita el pacto en Andalucía».
Precisely that situation is what the candidate of the PP to the mayor's office, the councilor María Mut, for whom this electoral call favors his party «y sobretodo a España». Mut is the hardest with the work of Sánchez's executive, who says that «no podía haberlo hecho peor» and to whom you claim «un mínimo de honradez y sentido común».
Rafa Carrió, vice-mayor and candidate of Compromís a la alcaldía, reconoce que «ya tocaba convocar elecciones», si bien él apostaba por un «Superdomingo» de mayo, haciendo coincidir los comicios municipales, autonómicos, generales y europeos. Para Carrió «no hay que infravalorar a las personas», without considering that it may affect one or the other level that the voting coincides in the same day. Even so, the Compromís candidate is not clear that his party will favor this date. As for the result in the generals, he is convinced that it will be a diverse result that will force the parties to sit down to negotiate. He recognizes, yes, that he really expects a leftist government to govern.
A desire shared by the candidate for mayor for Podemos, Alex Rodenkirchen, who is confident that «la gente se dé cuenta de la necesidad de aprobar unos presupuestos progresistas como los que han tumbado esta semana». For the candidate of Podemos, the fact that both dates are so close in the calendar can «cansar al electorado», and whether or not it favors her delivery «lo tendrán que decir los votantes».
For his part, the Councilor for Citizens in the City of Dénia, Sergio Benito, considers that the date announced by Sánchez «no condiciona en nada al calendario local». If it benefits local citizens or not, consider that «a toro pasado siempre será más fácil hacer cálculos y previsiones». As for the results of the April 28, Benito is confident that «se produzca un cambio de gobierno».
