What if the High Street was pedestrian?

August 23 from 2017 - 07: 37

In September of 2016 the works of rehabilitation of the house of the street began San Jose. The one that until some years ago housed the Home of Retired people of Dénia will become, at the end of 2018, in a new cultural space in the center of Dénia.

Since the construction began, and until the end, the street has closed to traffic both San Jose and the first stretch of Calle Mayor, leaving this central pedestrian in a certain pedestrian way until the works are finished. It will be a year of the beginning of works, and the street breathes tranquility and peace.

What would happen if you pedestrianized the Calle Mayor? The government team has already stated on several occasions that its intention is to design a city designed for people and not for vehicles. The pedestrianization of Marqués de Campo street is very present in its agenda, and the redevelopment project of Pare Pere, Plaza Valgamediós and Tenor Cortis will be a reality in a few years.

We know all these projects and ideas, but ... What about Calle Mayor? Perhaps it is time to think about its function, now that the house on Calle San José will become a cultural space.

The closest example is Loreto Street. In its day it was passable, and although its pedestrianization generated doubts and much controversy, now it is difficult to imagine it as it was before. Could Greater Street undergo a similar transformation?

Compared to its parallel street, Calle Mayor is full of houses at the foot of the street, so it seems difficult to be overcrowded with bars or restaurants. So would the neighbors gain quality of life if the street became pedestrian? Or, on the contrary, would this day-to-day harm this decision?

This is just a reflection. What is certain is that this road needs something more affection on the part of the City: sidewalks, pavement and electrical installations urge an improvement. However we are facing one of the oldest streets in the city, full of history and potential.
