And if Dénia only has a few summer tourism seasons left, are there alternatives?

20 September 2023 - 09: 49

The main economic engine of Dénia is tourism. Everything was bet on it and it is a reality that now has to be dealt with. And not just any tourism, sun and beach tourism. In summer the population quadruples, being the time when a large portion of Dénia companies make, never better said, their August. But what if Dénia's main attraction became an obstacle? Is the city prepared for when that money stops coming in?

One of the worst fears of tourism in the Marina Alta is confirmed: the scorching heat scares away international visitors

This is not a dystopia, but a very likely reality in a few years. Dénia could stop being a reference destination in the coming summers. In fact, resentment is already being seen in the arrival of visitors from other countries. We have lost our main attraction and others have gained it: the climate.

The weather, the now worst enemy of Dénia

Foreign tourists have been seduced all this time by a Spain with unbeatable climatic conditions, very far from those of their places of origin. Conditions that, furthermore, few nearby countries could offer. But everything has changed. This season there has already been a loss of interest from abroad. "We have noticed the decrease in international tourists, which we attribute to the information about the different heat waves, among others," LaMarinaAlta.com published after conversations with AEHTMA.

Something similar happened among national tourism, opting for Dénia and this entire coast due to the great balance in temperatures, being particularly grateful for the nocturnal coolness typical of a place located on the seashore.

Now, we are chaining several consecutive seasons with too many torrid nights. In fact, tropical nights have quintupled since 1980. And the projections for the coming summers are not very hopeful. They are becoming more and more suffocating and what was once an attraction is now a reason to rethink one's destiny. And how many summers like the last ones will the national visitor be willing to continue putting up with before also opting for destinations with friendlier climates, such as the beaches from North?

Alternatives to summer

Here Dénia faces an important problem on the horizon, since right now it lives off the sun and the beach. Although there has been an intention to deseasonalize tourism, showing openness to betting on gastronomic, cultural or conference tourism, the truth is that the new models are far from being established. There is still an absolute dependence on the summer and the vacationer, also a consequence of the highly seasonal private exploitation.

But that deseasonalize which has been sold for so long as a way to decongest crowded summers, will now be the only feasible way to continue living off tourism in the coming decades. Summer could become Dénia's low season, so it is vital for the city's economy that it begins to open to models not focused on tourism or that efforts focus on finding the key to attract attention of the visitor in times when the heat is not overwhelming. And there is a lot of work ahead.

Denia is a city with excellent geographical advantages and enormous potential!!

  2. Ruben says:

It's the same heat as all of life, it only changes that:

Those of us who live here have to swallow and pay the mayor's salary.

But people get tired of paying top dollar and not having services. No cleaning. Nor anything. And they flee from Denia.

  3. Peter says:

The truth is that Dénia year after year is getting worse at what it offers. Increasingly dirty beaches: days and days go by without the cleaning services acting, traffic jams in the center, quite extreme heat, quite poor services and prices through the roof. We must look for other alternatives.

    • Ignacio says:

Cheaper right? Well, the heat is the same for the entire Coast and the entire Mediterranean, so they will say where. They go to the beach in summer and complain that it is hot and that everything is expensive….

    • Francisco de Cárdenas says:

I would start with the cleanliness, the dirt on the floor where black gum sticks to the floor for years is unforgivable. A cleaning machine has not passed here in decades. As an example, I can tell you that in the Marineta area there is a plaster stuck to the ground since last summer. If the City Council does not have money to buy cleaning machines, rent them. but please CLEAN DENIA IT IS A BEAUTIFUL CITY THAT IS DISGUSTING

  4. Laura says:

This summer we went to Denia and I was disappointed, the sidewalks were terrible to get from the Las Marinas highway to the center, there is no nice walk. A sewer smell in many areas and the beach full of algae in the sand. The town council should take more care of these things since it is a beautiful town and we love the area for its climate.

  5. Ignacio says:

In summer it is hot and now they want us to believe that this is not only not normal but it is also a problem. Crazy.

  6. Rafael says:

Denia's problem is the internal struggle of the
city council against the growth and development of the city. I live in Finland, and many of us who spend the summer in Denia are stopping going because of the terrible transportation service, both public and private. The taxi license thing is embarrassing and makes the stay in Denia more complicated.

    • Javi says:

Are we seriously continuing with the Climate Scam or the Hueval Warming?? But I am 38 years old and I remember summers like this or worse. What a beating you are taking on the subject... Enough of manipulating people and selling them the speech that those above tell you what you have to say. What Denia has to do is attract tourism all year round, have better service, improve infrastructure, provide hospitality with better service and attract foreigners who come with purchasing power. But if you don't even pave the streets, you scoundrels! What Grimalt has to do is stop with the LGTBI flags, remove the pin from the 2030 agenda and stop all the talking and get to work. That this is a win.

  8. jose says:

The tourism that has suffered the most is English tourism, among other things due to Brexit.
I don't think the heat issue is a problem, the summer tourist is what wants sun, heat and good weather, at night with the air conditioning you don't notice the tropical nights.
Another issue is whether this economic model is sustainable or not... there is a lot to solve there.
But it is not true that fewer tourists come due to the rise in temperatures, less come if the weather is bad like this month of September.

  10. Dani says:

    Dénia has no alternative.
Employment, transportation and tourism promotion must be promoted.

    • Santaneta says:

It is certain that the value of Denia is much more than reading six places, personally with a view of a town in favor of Denia it is much more interesting in all the cultures that have benefited the geographic Sort of yours.

  11. And everything remains the same says:

I have been commenting along the lines of this article for some time.

    Time to time.

The goose that lays the golden eggs is NOT eternal.

    Everything will come.

We will look back at the 8+4 years of socialist government and say, "cha no au vam vore vindre" and swallow it.

    • And everything remains the same says:

Psoe-compromis = denia ruined in misery

      • Ignacio says:

Has the PP provided or does it provide other alternatives? Let's remember the time of Camps and when they achieved an absolute majority. This is not about political ideologies.

        • misery commitment Psoe No says:

          Press -commitment = RUIN

        • MiseryMiseryMisery says:

          Psoe*

        • weighing the same song says:

What a time of the PP when there was money, work and prosperity, Valencia was known throughout the world. Come on, go to sleep

        • Ignacio says:

For “pesao cantinela”…what kind of work and prosperity was there during the time of the corrupt PP? Why did you stop voting? How much debt did they leave behind? How many cases of corruption were there that are still being heard in court? And beyond our borders no one has any idea who they were or what Valencia was. Take it.

        • weighing the same song says:

Ignacio and his lack of intelligence. Hey boy, I'm not going to tell you what everyone knows and why the PP of Zaplana or the PP in general here in the Valencian community gave splendor to this land. If you don't know, I'm sorry for you.

        • Ignacio says:

          Pesao Cantinela:
Now do you intend to clean up the image of the PP? Some corrupt just like PSOE and Compromis. Zaplana, Camps, Fabra, Alfonso Rus etc. all. I weigh

        • Ignacio says:

          Pesao Cantinela,
Corrupt no matter how hard you try to cover it up. Just like Compromis and PSOE. The same careerists who suck the System.

        • simple is says:

          Psoe-compromise = ruin

          Pp= money and work

  12. Joselito says:

I don't think we have to worry, our mayor Mr. Grimalt is managing it very well, by sowing progress as he is doing we will have a splendid future. If one day, I hope in the distant future, he leaves office, whoever succeeds him will only have to follow this path of progress.

  13. Olga Alonso says:

Denia wants tourism but for that it has to prepare itself, not only is it a beach, it has exorbitant prices that do not accompany it, as well as transportation. It will have to and not at the expense of the Dianenses.

  14. Nino says:

    Of course there are alternatives.
The City Council will now raise our taxes to be able to maintain its pace of life and that of its friends who today benefit only from tourism.
More public investments will be derived to do “institutional advertising” of a Denia in decline without taking into account the well-being and needs of the Citizens.
    Anyway nothing new, Chaos!

  15. Gabriel Parini Fernandez says:

Arguing that the cause is the rise in summer temperatures due to climate change implies evading responsibilities. The causes are multiple and some have already been mentioned. The comments show the need for authentic debate between all interested parties. The flourishing times in the history of Denia have always been related to abroad. It is not enough to manage in favor of the local population. The institutional image of Denia needs to be revitalized.

  16. Mirandess says:

I already have the solution: let them spend the summer in
    XATIVA,ALBACETE,TOLEDO,CACERES,SEVILLA,
    CORDOBA, TOLEDO, JAEN,

  17. Cat says:

I don't understand this article, I've been going to Denia every weekend for 10 years, there is more and more foreign population, and in summer it is impossible, the worst thing about Denia is from July 1 to August 15, the rest of the year perfect.

    • Hector says:

The problem in Denia is that the city council does not clean the rotten algae, the algae in the water are very good and create oxygen... when the sea takes them out they are a nest of shit... no city council does what they do in Denia.

  18. VOREM VOREM says:

APART FROM CLIMATE CHANGE, IT MUST BE SAY THAT DENIA HAS BECOME VERY EXPENSIVE COMPARED TO WHAT YOU GET. MANY BEACHES BUT THEY COULD BE CLEANER LIKE THE STREETS. TRASH CANS TO THE TOP, FULL TRASH CONTAINERS, TERRIBLE SERVICE IN MOST RESTAURANTS (PART OF THE FAULT OF THE GASTRONOMERS WHO DO NOT VALUE OR WANT TO PAY THE PEOPLE AS THEY SHOULD-TOTAL SLAVERY). CRAZY RENTAL PRICES WHERE I HAVE SEEN CHARGING €1.600/WEEK. FOR THAT PRICE, YOU CAN GO TO ANOTHER DESTINATION LIKE EGYPT, TURKEY ("YOU HAVE MORE MONEY TO EVEN GET YOUR HAIR 🙂 "). A LOT OF RED PRAWN……. WE ARE LOSING OUR COASTAL VILLAGE CULTURE WHICH WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN.

  19. Lucia says:

There is one thing wrong in your comment, there are not enough streetlights and opening it has to be done in turns and it is very heavy.

    ??

  20. Paula Mason says:

To attract low season visitors there will have to be an improvement in the bus service from the airports to and from Denia, (there is a great need for a direct bus) as not many UK visitors are hiring cars these days, a change to the Denia Bus winter timetables to and from Les Marines and Les Rotes (every two hours is not acceptable) and more parking spaces for those who do have a car (particularly visitors from France and Germany who drive to Spain).

    • Luis says:

If you look, there is no public transportation for the population and the guide asks for it for tourists. Because of course she cares about "the natives." Madam, people live here, let's see if they see it and accept it. This is not a British Colony.

      • Roy says:

Luis you a correct Denia is not a British Colony” – no colony of Britain would be allowed to get in the condition that we live in Denia I suggest that instead of Brit bashing you open your eyes and see the real problems that are in Denia To interested in made up “traditions” – how many falla fiestas can be fitted in a year – also moors – gastronomy (a red prawn !!!) wake up if Denia does not clean it's act up forget tourists- they will go elsewhere with their money

    • JC Dem says:

After having hired a car, you won't stop in Javea or Denia. No?

  21. Luis says:

Mediterranean coast, sun and beach. That's the claim, there's nothing more.

    • Dani says:

      Lie.
      We have rural tourism:
The Vall de Gallinera, the Comptat, Xativa, the Vall d'Albaida, the Safor…

      • Luis says:

In the North too and with better services. People don't come here for that.
By the way, the use of the word "lie"... I hope that in your day to day life you have it clearer.
