'Cerebrum' is born to claim the rights of people with acquired brain damage

25 March 2015 - 00: 00

150 people per year for each 100.000 inhabitants suffer some type of brain damage. Thrombosis, embolisms or cerebral hemorrhages are some of the most common. Currently, close to 8.000 people in the Valencian Community suffer some type of brain injury. Of these, an 25% dies in the first six months. Half of those who survive coexist with motor and sensory sequelae that require comprehensive work and ambulatory care.

These are just some data related to brain injuries that was announced by the director of La Pedrera Hospital, Jaume Morera, during the presentation of the new association cerebrum which aims to normalize the lives of those affected and their families, as well as claim their rights and respond to the needs of this group.

Presentation of the Cerebrum association

Cerebrum currently has 25 members who are joined by family members and professionals who collaborate with them. Since its creation at the end of 2014, the association has opted for the realization of days of family respite, workshops, specific training for family and physical education services.

But they want to go further and have set more ambitious goals, such as volunteering to assist the sick, disclose the existence of the association in the local society and use the space provided by the La Pedrera hospital with a calendar of occupation of space with various activities, as Bernat Tomás explained.

Solidarity marathon

As the first activity, which will serve both to raise awareness and to raise funds for the association, Cerebrum has scheduled a charity marathon indoor cycle and zumba to be held next April 26 in Pedreguer.

Those interested in participating can do so by registering for 8 euros online and in the house of Culture of Pedreguer. The benefits will be used to defray the expenses of the professionals who help the members of the association so that it does not entail any expense for the beneficiaries.

As reported by the association, 56 companies are already collaborating with the marathon with infrastructures or economically, so it is expected that the event is a successful participation.

It has been precisely one of the partners responsible for making the poster of the marathon, a clear design in which the image of two sneakers predominates - one for each of the sports that will be practiced - that resemble a brain and its two hemispheres.
