27 October 2017 - 17: 06

On the occasion of World Psoriasis Day, this Sunday 29 of October, in HLA San Carlos, have wanted to sensitize Dianenses about this disease, Psoriasis, a chronic and multisystemic disease that has an important impact on the quality of life of patients.

According to the clinic, the mortality rate is low, but it increases the risk of cardiovascular events and neoplasias.

"Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects around the 1-2% of the general population and seems to be the result of the interaction of genetic factors, alterations in the immune system and factors present in the environment that surrounds us, which can occur at any age and in both sexes ", says Dr. Alonso, a dermatologist at HLA Hospital San Carlos Office, based on recent scientific studies by specialists Schön and Boehncke, in his book Psoriasis, and in the statements of Luis Puig Sanz in Psoriasis, a systemic disease?

The form and the degree of affectation are very varied, being able to appear from scarce and small injuries until occupying an almost total extension of the body, scalp and even the nails. "The most common type of psoriasis is one that manifests itself with pink or reddish plaques very well delimited and covered with silver scales", describes Dr. Alonso, but clarifies that "However, there are also forms of pustular psoriasis in which blisters of whitish content (pus) appear, forms in which skin folds (armpits, English, etc.) or even severe erythrodermic forms are affected in which they remain committed the almost totality of the skin ".

Psoriasis not seen

In addition to the skin lesions that characterize it, HLA professional San Carlos warns that psoriasis "It seems to be intimately linked to factors that increase the risk of suffering cardiovascular accidents (such as cerebral and cardiac infarctions): hypertension, high cholesterol levels and triglycerides in the blood, obesity or diabetes ". It has also been linked to multiple diseases that affect organs other than the skin such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and even different types of tumors, among others.

Despite the constant advances in the knowledge of this disease, "There is currently no curative treatment for it, but there are multiple topical (primarily corticosteroid or vitamin D analogue) and systemic (either tablets or injectables or form of ultraviolet radiation), which will be chosen according to the severity of the disease, always taking into account the preferences and comorbidities of each patient in particular ", says Dr. Alonso.

"As it is a chronic disease, it will have an oscillating evolutionary course, with periods of remission and others of worsening. In addition, all possible cardiovascular risk factors and recommending their treatment should be identified, along with advising a healthy diet, regular physical exercise, as well as the cessation of smoking and alcohol consumption ". HLA doctor San Carlos concludes that "This disease must be managed in a multidisciplinary way, collaborating among the different medical specialties to achieve the best result for patients".
