HLA San Carlos awareness of the campaign "A tree for each newborn" on the day of the preservation of the Ozone Layer

20 September 2018 - 12: 27

On the day of the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, the past 16 of September, HLA San Carlos once again raised awareness in the campaign 'One tree for every newborn'.

This date proposed by the General Assembly of the United Nations, aims to raise public awareness of the importance of joining forces to mitigate the deterioration of the ozone layer within the Montreal Protoolo's mardo, under the motto, 'Keep cool and continue'.

"It has two connotations on the one hand that our work to protect the ozone layer also protects the climate and that the Montreal protocol is a 'cool' treaty as exemplifies its extraordinary success" Assure from the United Nations.

The hospital joins this initiative on a day-to-day basis, as reflected in obtaining the ISO 14.001: 2015 accreditation that the HLA Group obtained for all hospitals and central services. "We have much to do, to remedy and above all very much to change our lifestyle and priorities. From HLA we are committed to carry out actions that guarantee change " says Elvira Calvente, environmental biologist and corporate environmental responsible for the HLA Group. "We work daily to avoid those activities and products that emit Fluorocarbons (CFCs), the compounds that pollute the ozone layer and increase the greenhouse effect. Among other initiatives, we are replacing the most polluting refrigerants with others whose environmental impact is lower, making all of our centers leak control of their equipment by authorized and environmentally committed companies, and the consumption of fossil fuels in the boilers is being replaced by others. lower impact such as natural gas or propane " Calvente ensures.

Digital transformation as attenuating

The entire HLA Group is in the process of digitalization in order to contribute to the reduction of consumption of those natural resources by applying good practices and especially by reducing the use of these as an environmental objective for all its centers.

"We have developed different projects, including the training and awareness of our employees in this area and we have also launched two important platforms for our patients to also collaborate with the Environment and therefore help us to achieve the goal. This is the Patient Portal and the HLA App, digital platforms through which a large amount of paper is saved in authorizations, results or appointment requests among others " says Luisa Bautista, Director of Exploitation and Resources of HLA.

One tree for each newborn

Last June, coinciding with the week in which World Environment Day is celebrated, the HLA Group joined Greenfriends, the environmental branch of the NGO ETW, which, among other actions, has a project called "adopta a tree "thanks to which they reforest needed areas of our forests. The HLA Group donated a tree for each baby born during that week in total 80 trees that, if the parents wanted, they could follow the evolution of it, plant it and even go visit it.

"The plantations are made in collaboration with the town councils that lay the land, make the holes, clear the land in the spring and provide water for irrigation" says Celina Aragoneses, head of Greenfriends. "In the absence of confirmation, the trees donated by HLA to the families will be planted in December or next spring, in areas of Segovia where there have been fires to help in the reforestation. The species of trees depend on the area where they are planted, but they are usually native such as holm oak, ash, juniper, juniper, etc."Says Celina. "The preservation of the ozone layer is a necessity that in HLA we assume as a commitment", concludes the biologist.
