The pulmonology specialist at Dénia Hospital recommends saying no to tobacco and vaping, breathing clean air and exercising regularly

23 September 2022 - 12: 50

The physician specialist in pulmonology of the Hospital de Dénia, Dr. Miguel Ángel Císcar, assures that various factors such as air quality, smoking, vaping, respiratory infections and the effects of climate change (such as heat waves and haze) are key to understanding the boom of respiratory pathology.

Tobacco causes highly prevalent diseases such as COPD or lung cancer. Its damages are widely known by the general population, however the same does not happen with the vaper. According to Dr. Císcar, it is not uncommon for patients who want to quit smoking to vape with electronic cigarettes. “This is a practice that we discourage. The substances contained in the cartridges of electronic cigarettes can cause irritation of the eyes, throat and hyperreactivity of the respiratory tract and be dangerous in subjects with underlying respiratory pathologies”, he explains.

In relation to the use of vapers, the pulmonology specialist assures that the existence of "lung injury associated with vaping" has recently been evidenced. This is a potentially serious injury that can cause respiratory failure and sometimes the need for assisted ventilation.
