Dénia getting closer to becoming a smart city

12 2024 April - 13: 24

The Councilor for Territory, Maria Josep Ripoll, gave a press conference this Friday to talk about the actions of the Dénia City Council in terms of lighting. The objective of these is to ensure that the town becomes a "smart city", or intelligent city, based on the investment in more ecological lighting that can be controlled in real time, adjusting it to the needs of each moment.

To this end, a new 15-year contract has been established with the energy services company, SITELEC, which had already started working with the city council in March 2023. "It represents a saving on the energy bill for the municipal coffers of 558.599 euros ( in the previous year) and the modernization of public lighting," explained Ripoll, who highlighted that in this way the Sustainable Development Goals regarding CO2 emissions and light pollution of the 2030 urban agenda are also met.

Therefore, 4.715 luminaires have been replaced with LED technology, and action has also been taken on 197 lighting control panels in which remote management equipment has been installed. "This prevents the emission of 1.250 tons of CO2 annually into the atmosphere," said the councilor.

One of the first points in which action was taken was the lighting of the Montgó, in which 103 solar streetlights were replaced with LED technology and a modernization of the solar panel system was carried out. This has made it possible to put the lighting fixtures into operation, "which were not working." On the other hand, the city council plans to install another thirty more streetlights.

"The new lights last more than twice as long as their sodium vapor predecessors and reduce energy consumption by 2,4 GWh/year, a decrease of around 70%," commented Ripoll.

Performances in sports facilities

The councilor has reported that the replacement of the lighting equipment in the Football field El Rodat, the Diego Mena Soccer Field and the Madrigueres sports facilities, Joan Fuster Pavilion and the Trinquet, which represents a 25% reduction in energy consumption.

In addition, a couple of weeks ago the installation of 110 photovoltaic modules on the roof of the Trinquet The Rovellet, which will provide energy for the annual lighting of different public buildings: 16% of the total energy for the pavilion; 40,32% will go to the city council and 43,66% will cover the consumption of the Urban Planning, Youth and Environment Building.
