CEDMA alerts to the proliferation of Xylella fastidiosa in the Marina Alta

January 19 from 2018 - 17: 35

The agricultural sector of the Marina Alta has encountered a new enemy in recent months. It is Xylella Fastidiosa, a bacterium that causes a deadly disease with no known cure and that in the region is being primed especially with almond trees in the Vall de Pop or Gata de Gorgos areas.

Last December, the Conselleria issued a resolution to remove entire terraces of almond trees in various towns of the Marina Alta, the only measure that is being applied to fight against this bacterium.

Now, with the aim of supporting the agricultural sector of the region, the Cercle d'Empresaris de la Marina Alta has agreed to issue a document this week to the Department of Agriculture. From the CEDMA they consider that the population has been informed very little about this plague.

The businessmen warn that, if they proliferate, a large part of the cooperatives and wineries in the region are at risk, as well as an incipient tourism activity that is completely deseasonalized and that depends largely on the primary and secondary sectors. In this sense, they refer to initiatives such as "Feslalí, Alcanalí en flor"; the "Mercat de la terra", the "Festa de la verema" or "Xalónia" of Xaló; "Sunset between vineyards" in Poble Nou de Benitatxell, and many more.

Therefore, from the Cercle Empresarial de la Marina Alta has urged the Ministry of Agriculture to take urgently as many measures as necessary to address this problem in the short, medium and long term, since the consequences can be nefarious both for the primary sector and for the whole of the economic activity of the region.
