Baleària puts afloat the first ferry powered by natural gas from the Mediterranean

03 2018 April - 08: 00

Hypatia of Alexandria, the first of the two ferries with generators propelled by natural gas that will sail through the Mediterranean, it has come out afloat. The dianense shipping company Baleària has launched this vessel, which is scheduled to operate in the Balearic Islands at the beginning of 2019.

This launching means that the structural part of it is finished. However, in the coming months, many jobs must continue to be undertaken, most of them in electrical and mechanical installations, as well as all the clearance of the passenger and crew areas.

The president of the shipping company, Adolfo Utor, has highlighted "the company's strategic commitment to clean energy" adding that these vessels will be a "reference in innovation and sustainability". Utor has detailed that liquefied natural gas allows to reduce 30% carbon emissions (CO2), 85% nitrogen oxide (NOx) and completely eliminate sulfur and particulate emissions. "The use of this energy contributes to the fight against climate change and public health" has stressed.

Baleària 200 invests millions of euros in the construction of these two smart ships pioneers in the Mediterranean, with identical characteristics: 186,5 meters in length, maximum speed of 24 knots and capacity for 810 people, 2.180 linear meters of cargo and 150 vehicles. The works are being carried out in the Italian shipyard Cantiere Navale Visentini.
