Coast of Dénia. 16 March of 1799. 4 in the morning. The frigate La Guadalupe, commanded by José de la Encina, ran aground in the area between Punta del Sard and Punta Negra, in Les Rotes, while fleeing English ships.

147 men, of 327 who were on board lost their lives to the despair of the Dianense population, succored with food, clothing and blankets to those who managed to leave the sea lashed by the storm. Wine and brandy to help faint back to life. Caldo in particular to feed the survivors households, and a prisoner who helped his captors to save his life.

This is how Francisco Palau Diego, the Historian Palau, tells us, one of the lesser-known episodes of the 18th century in the city of Dénia, which disrupted the tranquility of the municipality.
