A new electronic protocol decreases the times in the diagnosis and treatment of Sepsis and Pneumonia at the Hospital de Dénia

The times of diagnosis and treatment in Sepsis and Pneumonia have been reduced at the Hospital de Dénia. And all thanks to a new protocol implemented that helps clinicians, doctors and nurses, to have scientific evidence available online in their own Electronic Medical Record -HCE- at each of the moments of the process, both for Sepsis and Pneumonia .

Specifically, the administration of antibiotics has been reduced in up to 45 minutes in the Sepsis process, while in the pneumonia the request for diagnostic tests, such as blood cultures, has been advanced up to one hour.

For Dr. Patricia Martín Rico, Chief of Internal Medicine of the Department of Health of Dénia "It is a very powerful tool for clinicians and residents that avoids clinical variability in diagnosis and treatment. This can drastically impact on mortality, morbidity, the average stay of patients and complications that may arise from the process".

Dr. Antonio Valdivia, Head of Preventive Medicine of the DSD, for his part, affirms that "The reduction of time in the Sepsis process is fundamental, since it is a time-dependent pathology. In addition, it allows patients to be better classified and, consequently, to prioritize care. All this, adds Valdivia, results in greater patient safety ".

As explained by the Director of Systems and Information Technologies of the Department, Vicent Moncho, "the benefits are not only assistance, since the data is accumulated in the HCE for its later exploitation".

The electronic protocol was awarded at the HIMSS Europe 2018 meeting, held recently in Sitges.
