Diana turtle returns home

14 July 2015 - 12: 50

La loggerhead Diana has returned to swimming in the sea today after nearly two years of recovery in the Sea Ark Oceanogràfic of Valencia.

This turtle, which was found in September 2013 by a recreational boat off the coast of Alicante, had to be treated in this center because of the injuries he had. It was found wrapped in plastic waste and ropes and not for his rescue would have died.

In addition, the turtle caretta carettaAs its scientific name, it has had to be operated and amputated a fin. It has been released without the upper right flipper, but according to Juan Eymar, marine wildlife technician of the Department of the Environment, will have no trouble swimming. In the words of Eymar "The turtles use the front fins to propel themselves and the rear ones as a rudder, but in case they lose one of the ones used for rowing, one of the rear ones will have that function". Thus says "turtles with one less fin have been seen on the beaches, at the time of laying eggs."

This type of turtles, the loggerhead turtles, are the most numerous in the Mediterranean Sea. Our coasts are not the preferred ones for nesting, but at some time they have been seen laying eggs in Levantine sands. Its favorite beaches are those of Greece, which is where more turtles are born from the Mediterranean. In addition, in Dénia we are lucky that the Marine Reserve is the passage of several types of turtles and also of cetaceans, such as whales Common rorqual, The second largest in the world, which have been sighted on several occasions a few meters from the coast.

The turtle, which has named him Diana in honor of Dénia, where he would be released, he came to Valencia and after recovery was sent to the Aquarium Lisbon to become part of an exhibition about pollution in marine animals. There put a satellite, which yielded the same Portuguese aquarium, to follow the footsteps of our friend. In the coming days, the website of the City of Denia there will be a section where we can see where Diana.

The tour to return sea Denia has come early, aboard a catamaran. And at sea, inside the Marine Reserve of Cabo de San Antonio, Diana has been released and has not wanted to stay among us as quickly as he was photographed by a diver, has gone into the depths, where will regain life he lost because of some plastics.

In this sense, the councilor and the environment, Josep Crespo, has taken advantage of the liberation to try to make people aware that the more we pollute our waters, the more turtles will suffer. In the same way, it has been commented that in case of finding or fishing for one, it is never necessary to return it to the sea but that it is necessary to call the emergency telephone number (112) so that it is treated in centers like the one of the Oceanographic of Valéncia.

We wish her a good trip to our turtle Diana!
