The Generalitat will cover the open wells in the Montgó Natural Park

January 29 from 2019 - 08: 49

The Generalitat Valenciana, through the Montgó Natural Park, will cover the uncovered wells in the mountain. This was confirmed by the Councilor for the Environment, Josep Crespo, to Dénia.com on Monday.

Crespo explained that these are open wells for the old houses built in the Camí de la Colonia in the 20 years of the last century to extract water. At first, these tanks were covered with a small roof that has now disappeared.

The wells have been open for almost a century. But now, the tragedy lived with the little Julen in Totalán (Málaga) has aroused the concern of neighbors in the mountain areas. These photos were shared by a user on Facebook. It is an existing well on the road that connects La Marquesa with the way up to the Montgó.

La imagen, compartida en el grupo «La Ciudad de Dénia», ha generado un intenso debate y ha despertado la preocupación de los usuarios de ese camino y de los vecinos en general.

The history of the Camí de la Colònia

In the 1921 year, the Colonia Agrícola del Montgó was launched, an action that ended with the construction of 51 lots of parcels of about three hectares distributed among the settlers for their cultivation. Each plot had space to cultivate and a simple house with a corral with access from the inside and from the outside and an oven and a cistern on both sides of the building.

The work began with the construction of stone terraces on the slope of the Montgó to facilitate the cultivation of steep slopes, allowing the cultivation of vines, almonds and carob trees. To access the plots, an access road was built, which we now know as the Camí de la Colònia, and in which there are still remains of the houses that were built.

Over time the plots were successfully cultivated, but the decline of the grape export and the economic crisis of 1929 and its aftermath led to the abandonment of the crop and subsequent abandonment of the plots by the settlers.
