The whale whale, the most unique visitor on the coast of Denia

26 June 2017 - 00: 00

The whale whale, the second largest whale in the world, with dimensions up to 24 meters, has become a visitor to our coasts. In the first six months of 2017 more specimens of this animal have been seen than in all 2016 off the coast of Denia.

This was stated by the head of the Surveillance service of the Marine Reserve of the Cabo de San Antonio, Toni Martínez, during the presentation at the Marina and Tourist Marina of Dénia Project Rorcual, An initiative that is presented for the first time in the region. This project aims to increase knowledge about the Common Fin (Balaenoptera physalus) in the Mediterranean Sea.

For Gabriel Martinez, director of the Marina, "It is very important that projects like this are developed so that we know the wealth we have in the sea and thus, through knowledge, we awaken the desire to protect them. Society has to be aware that life depends on the proper functioning of the sea. Unfortunately we have been able to observe that these wonderful cetaceans navigate waters coinciding with merchant routes".

For his part, Eduard Degollada, head of the Project Rorcual explained that "Much of the cetaceans arrive from the Atlantic through the Strait of Gibraltar, while others spend the winter months without leaving the Mediterranean. The main towns are located in Italy and the French Riviera and when spring begins you can see on the coasts of Catalonia. It is in May and June when they sail near Dénia and Xàbia to Cabo de la Nao, where they turn again in the direction of Ibiza ".
