Health Alert - Society

In Dénia there have been more infections in the last week than between March and August

The situation in the Marina Alta during the pandemic has been somewhat different from that of most health departments. During the blow to reality that the first wave represented, in which we had to lock ourselves in our homes to protect ourselves from a hitherto unknown threat, the Dénia health department enjoyed a somewhat calmer reality than that of the rest of Spain. The incidence of COVID-19 was very low.

It was not until the end of August when, already receiving the second wave, Dénia stood out compared to other departments, suffering for almost three weeks one of the most worrying incidents among the Valencian municipalities. However, that lasted for three weeks, largely due to the easing of summer season restrictions that especially affected tourist destinations. Being one of the biggest claims of the Valencian coast, the town soon suffered this increase in cases.

Already at the beginning of September, the incidence was deflated and it endured with one of the best situations of, again, the entire Community until Christmas. These last parties have been a great blow to the whole country with hardly any exceptions. In this case, Dénia has maintained a line in line with that of the other departments and has seen how its incidence has soared to record levels. And not only that, but the town has had, and maintains, one of the highest incidents among the different Valencian municipalities.

The evolution of the coronavirus in Dénia has been very uneven, leaving headlines like the one in this piece: during the first 6 months of the pandemic in the area, between March 1 and August 25, fewer cases were added in the town than those notified between January 22 and 29 (latest records to date). That is, these last 7 days with official data there has been more impact of the coronavirus (271 new infections) than during half a year, already entering the second wave (on August 25 it was reported that Dénia had reached 252 positives in the entire pandemic ). A headline that reflects the exceptional situation of the capital of the Marina Alta during that first onslaught, but also the tricky and tough situation that is currently being experienced.
