The Regional Hospital hosted last Friday, June 3, the I Conference on Bioethics, which under the title Limitation of treatment: clinical ethics It focused on values and patient opinion.

Professor Dr. Diego Gracia Guillén, President of the Foundation Health Sciences, collaborator of the CSIC, Professor of History of Medicine of the Complutense University and Director of the Master in Bioethics of the UCM was responsible for presenting a keynote address on Clinical Ethics or Care Bioethics as a discipline and science that arises with the aim of helping health professionals to make decisions about the treatment of patient.

According to Gracia, therapeutic doubts or conflicts when making decisions do not arise from objective data such as clinical data; but of the subjective ones, which are the ones that contribute the values: hence the importance of taking them into account and incorporating methodology when it comes to resolving the conflict and making the most correct clinical decision possible.

Bioethics is based on patient autonomy, beneficence, as not to cause harm, and the principle of justice, which is to give the patient what is most appropriate for each situation. Thus a more horizontal relationship with the patient, who must never lose any of their rights and defend their values.
