From brick to dust: this is how a protected property becomes the history of Dénia

16 September 2021 - 09: 08

One by one the bricks have come loose ending one of the buildings with the most personality in Les Rotes. The landscape of Punta Negra will no longer be the same, leaving nothing behind what was once the most imposing of the estates in the area. It is history.

Only a couple of days have been needed to turn a building with an area of 337 square meters into a wasteland, divided between two large main floors and a tiny third of barely 9 m2. Although a priori the size of this third floor made it insignificant, the truth is that the weight of the building's personality and the most iconic part of the place fell on it. This was a tower that stood out from the center of the roof and inside which the neighbors affirm that there was a small chapel. It was the heart of the house, and the last thing to stop under the demolition machines.

The farm was located on an area of 14.441 square meters. It is the largest extension of developable land on Carrer Unicorni, where it is located, and one of the largest in Les Rotes. Or it was, because now a dozen plots will be extracted from there that will completely change the landscape of the place. Where previously the balance between the original natural landscape and brick was preserved, soon only construction will remain and green space will be limited to the gardens of these luxury villas.

The City Council removed the protection of the now disappeared property

The most striking thing about this demolition is not the fact itself, but how the execution has been allowed. It is a building that was protected in the catalog of real estate that the Dénia City Council approved in 2004. However, in the update of this, dated 2017, this house had been excluded, like so many others.

Many of those who left the catalog in 2017 have suffered the same fate after the local administration turned its back on them. What was once protected to preserve for its value has now been sold to the highest bidder.
