Baleària reaffirms its commitment to the environment, whose main line of work at this time is the use of liquefied natural gas, combining the incorporation of biodegradable kitchenware and utensils in restaurants self-service and coffee shops of the ships that operate between the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

This action is linked to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations, the number 12, which aims to guarantee sustainable consumption and production methods to contribute to preserving the environment.

The maritime company is the first to integrate edible straws, 100% natural, biodegradable and with a recyclable and sustainable packaging. From the Sorbos brand, they are the first edible and flavored straws on the market, with a caloric level lower than a sugar.

Baleària has chosen to use utensils manufactured with two biodegradable components. On the one hand, recycled cellulose cardboard, which is itself recyclable and has a degradation time of up to one year. On the other hand, the plastic of lactic polyacid (PLA), a thermoplastic obtained from corn starch, cassava, cassava or sugarcane, and that easily degrades in water and carbon oxide. In addition, it is manufactured at low temperatures, with the consequent saving of natural resources.

These biodegradable materials are used in glasses, napkins, tablecloths, stirrers, spoons, straws and other single-use containers.

The company has other environmental projects such as a clean-up plan based on ecological products or a circular economy project to build green furniture with waste generated on ships.
