The Dénia Hospital warns of the risks of sunbathing after confinement

11 June 2020 - 15: 02

The Dénia Health Department offers some recommendations for sunbathing after confinement. And he warns of the importance of preventing skin lesions that can degenerate into melanomas.

As stated by Dr. Joan Manel Gasent, Head of Oncology at the Dénia Health Department: “After several months without being exposed to the sun, the skin is more sensitive to solar radiation and it is essential to take measures. Melanin levels are lower and ultraviolet radiation is getting higher. " Ultraviolet radiation has important harmful consequences for the skin and is one of the main causes of different skin cancers. "The key to avoiding malignant injuries is in prevention ”, states Dr. Gasent, who recommends:

1. The sun exposure gradually, avoiding the central hours of the day, from 12:00 to 16:00.
2. The use of protective cream, hats, sunglasses and t-shirts against UVB rays to avoid burning.
3. Special caution with fair skin. Light-skinned people are more likely to get burns from sun exposure. If they don't take care of their skin from the beginning, they risk developing keratoses, cutaneous carcinomas, which increase the risk of melanoma. That is why it is important to be aware of the type of skin that each one has and protect yourself from childhood.
4. Check the skin every month as a preventive measure. The rapid growth of a skin lesion, the color change or the irregularity of the margins that define it, are the reason for medical consultation.
Avoid malignant injuries, also for aesthetic reasons. The skin must be taken care of from a young age to avoid, not only that melanomas appear in adulthood, but that we do not make more wrinkles. The sun also causes nevi (freckles) and squamous cell carcinomas, less aggressive than melanomas.
