«Viu la posidonia», the experiential ecotourism project that will connect Dénia, Ibiza and Cambrils

May 30 from 2022 - 14: 31

The mayors of Dénia, Ibiza and Cambrils, Vicent Grimalt, Rafa Ruiz and Oliver Klein, have met today in Ibiza to announce the progress in the "Viu la posidonia" project. The experiential ecotourism project has been agreed upon by the three consistories and is eligible to be developed through the aid of the "Spain Tourism Experiences" program.

The development of this project has a budget of 1.371.636 euros and, although the granting of aid has not yet been resolved, the mayors have agreed that, if the project does not finally obtain European funding, the municipalities will take charge in order to get it running.

"I saw the posidonia"

The ultimate goal of the initiative is not to get more tourism to these three cities, commented the Ibizan mayor, but rather to make the people who visit them aware of the importance of Posidonia and the benefits it brings to the waters of the Mediterranean and For the enviroment.

"Viu la posidonia" is a tourism product with a zero carbon footprint that favors knowledge about a part of the marine ecosystem that is essential for the conservation of biodiversity on the coast, the cleanliness of the waters, the protection of the first line of the beach in front of to storms and atmospheric carbon fixation. All this through a set of activities compatible with the enjoyment of the beaches and the realization of active and healthy leisure practices.

In this way, the project wants to help to get to know this plant that inhabits the seabed and contributes to making the population aware that these algae that reach the beaches are proof of the health of the coastline and a guarantee that the coast will continue to be a privileged place.

Among the actions envisaged in the "Viu la posidonia" project are the identification with cartography of the spaces with posidonia that can be visited, involving tourist agents in dissemination, editing informative material and holding awareness days and the creation of a virtual center of posidonia.

The mayor of Ibiza has highlighted that although it is a project between only three consistories, "valuing Posidonia is not a solitary task, but rather requires higher administrations, especially the State, to carry out actions such as, for example, put an end to the uncontrolled anchoring that destroys the meadows”.

For his part, Grimalt has pointed out that «Viu la posidonia» has to complement “the protection and awareness actions that we have been carrying out for a long time in our municipalities and introduce the preservation of this natural wealth in the tourist agenda, as one more attraction, as part of the experience that the tourist can live”.

As an example of these actions around posidonia that have been launched in Dénia, the mayor has cited the seaweed barriers that are put on the beach to protect it from storm erosion or a pilot project to create new dunes using remains of dried seaweed.

On the other hand, the mayor of Cambrils has recalled that the protection of Posidonia meadows "is one of the issues that most concerns fishermen in the area, who are well aware of the benefits that the presence of this plant represents." In this way, Klein has confirmed that the three municipalities will continue to work together and that the granting of the European subsidy, if it occurs, "will mark a before and after".
