A fortnight of cetacean sightings in the four Marine Observation Days Dénia 2021

29 June 2021 - 13: 04

Dénia has celebrated one more year the 'Obmar' Marine Observation Days, which between June 22 and 25 have recorded a fortnight of cetacean sightings, in addition to different species of birdlife (shaggy cormorant, Balearic shearwater and cinderella, moors, flamingos, peregrine falcons and gannets), sunfish and flying fish and a loggerhead turtle (1 m shell).

Regarding cetaceans, in the four days of study and observation, organized by the Dénia City Council and in which the University of Valencia, the Ministry of the Environment, Xaloc and the Polytechnic University of Valencia have participated, from the Gandia campus , 6 groups of bottlenose dolphins and 8 specimens of fin whales have been sighted, the second largest animal on the planet.

The observation points have been four simultaneous platforms, from land and by sea: the Dénia Coast Guard boat and the Mundo Marino company's catamaran; and on land, the cetacean and marine avifauna observatory, which the council has installed at the end of Les Rotes, and the Gerro tower.

Since May, the month in which the season of passage of these marine giants off the Dianense coast begins, and to date, 19 fin whale sightings have been recorded (in 2020, the figure amounted to 94 whales sighted from Dénia).

'Cabo Fin whale' project

It should be noted that during the 2021 season, the Gerro tower observation point is part of the 'Cabo Rorcual' project, on the UPV's Gandia campus; project sponsored by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and which also has the collaboration of the Dénia City Council.

The 'Cabo Rorcual' project has taken the Dénia coast as the basis of the investigation as it is the geographical point with the highest frequency of cetacean passage in the entire Valencian Community.
