A carpet of small jellyfish covers the beaches of Dénia

07 2022 April - 09: 57

After the storm of the past few days, the beaches of Dénia show a most curious picture: a purple mantle covers the sand and rocks in several coastal points. This has drawn the attention of neighbors who have come to see what is invading their coastline. But what is it that lands on our coast.

It is a tiny jellyfish specimen that has been dragged by the sea and the wind, since this species is guided by small sails that protrude from the water. Thousands of these specimens have come so close to the coast that, due to the storm surge, they have ended up perching on the sand on beaches such as El Trampolí and Blay Beach.

Despite how shocking it is to see so many jellyfish together on the shore, the truth is that there is nothing to worry about, since it is a jellyfish whose toxins are harmless to people. Of course, they release a strong smell when crushing them and have caused more than one slip among those who get too close to them.
