A dream come true: Condenados al Bordillo opens a house adapted for people with disabilities

02 December 2021 - 10: 06

For several years, Condenados al Bordillo had as one of its priority projects the creation of a space, specifically a house, where it can contribute to the gradual development of personal and social autonomy for people with disabilities.

This project, called "Autonomous and shared life", began to be a reality when in 2020 the City Council of Dénia gave a home to the Association. With enthusiasm, obtaining aid from different sources and thanks to the enormous economic effort that Condenados al Bordillo has made, it was possible to completely reform and thus be able to begin to realize this dream.

The house, located on the ground floor of Montcada street, has been completely renovated to improve mobility inside, configuring the spaces in the most diaphanous way possible, increasing the interior luminosity and the feeling of spaciousness. In the bathroom, wheelchair access is guaranteed with a continuous floor covering its entire surface. At the end of October 2021, the house was completely renovated and adapted and, as of November, the second phase of the project began: habitability and use.

The main objective of the project is to integrate different people with disabilities in the same house, proposing alternatives that reinforce the personal development of each of the people who participate. The house aims to take a further step in the autonomy and independence of the users through a learning program and also give their families a break.

Some of the more specific objectives are:

  • Teach them to organize their time through leisure activities, self-care and social relationships, as well as the acquisition of habits and routines.
  • Learn to perform daily household tasks.
  • Offer family members an assistance resource in emergency situations.
  • Promote interpersonal relationships between all participants.
  • Offer weekend respites.
  • Encourage the acquisition and maintenance of healthy eating and personal hygiene habits.
  • Acquire stability and security, developing as people in an environment other than the family home.

From Condenados al Bordillo they have highlighted that "this project is a reality thanks to the Dénia City Council and all the individuals who have trusted and collaborated economically. Also to the commitment and enthusiasm shown by all the people who have carried out the reform of the house and, as no, to life, for showing us and opening the way to continue trusting in it. A dream for many of our users and their families! ".
