What are "els calçots"
The "calçots", also written in Spanish calsots, are a variety of onion typical of the Ebro area, more specifically in the city of Valls. The calsots are cooked grilled and served accompanied by a special tomato-based sauce, hazelnuts, almonds, bread and oil, among other ingredients, the so-called "Salvitxada".
It is in the town of Valls where "the calçotada", a popular party that brings together a large number of visitors from all over Spain on the last weekend of January and in which calsots, typical salsa and wine are distributed among the attendees.
Calsots have a very typical way of eating. They must be peeled with the hands to remove the first black layers by the coals, they must be wet inside the sauce and introduced in the mouth with one hand. This ritual makes it necessary to use a bib so as not to be stained, an object that is also distributed among the attendees during the popular calsotada de Valls.
Where to eat "calçots" in Dénia
It is not necessary that you go to Valls to try the typical menu of calsots, nor that you wait a year until next January. Now you can taste the traditional menu of calsots here, in Dénia, in the restaurant Voramar because every Saturday and Sunday at noon during the months of February and March you will be able to put on your boots with their typical menu of calsots. For 15 euros per person you have a drink, the traditional grilled stews, the sauce and bread, charcuterie, potatoes with the poor and artisan dessert (* does not include drinks or liquors).
