Podem Dénia proposes a large reduction in salaries and political expenses if they enter the local government

November 24 from 2022 - 09: 29

The candidate of Podem to the mayor of Dénia, Juanjo Nieves, has recalled this week that in 2015, when Podemos became part of the municipal corporation, the salaries of the mayor and other local politicians by 10%. However, in 2019, when the PSPV achieved an absolute majority, the first measure they adopted was to raise their salary by 25%, as they remember from the purple formation, a measure that did not appear in their electoral program and that makes Vicent Grimalt in the highest paid mayor of the region.

That is why Nieves considers that there is room for this 10% reduction. "We already did it once and we will do it again if the people give us that mandate." The salaries of the current government team amount to more than 400.000 euros a year, while those of the opposition are much more modest. "With the proposed measure, 160.000 euros per legislature could be saved only in salaries of the government team, which would be used to support small local businesses."

"The mayor of Dénia has spent hundreds of thousands of euros per legislature to promote gastronomy, with its famous DNAs, but local businesses have not received the same treatment," they criticize from Podem. The purple leader believes that it is not a good idea to turn Dénia into a gastronomic monoculture, as was demonstrated during the confinement. «The hotel industry without trade would not have a future either, both need each other and both must receive the same support. In fact, in some respects, trade is suffering the most from the current crisis."

30.000 euros in hotels and trips for the mayor

For her part, the number 2 on the list, Cristina Molinillo, recalled that Vicent Grimalt, since he became mayor in 2015, has spent more than 30.000 euros on trips and hotels for his work representing Dénia around the world, apart from his salary of 54.000 euros a year, according to the data that appears on the transparency portal. “We understand that it is a small and symbolic item in the municipal budget, and that a part of these expenses are necessary and must be covered, but we also believe that there is room for savings in that item and to convey an image of austerity to citizens, so a 50% saving would be perfectly viable and that item would be well received by small businesses.
