Podem Dénia urges the supermarkets of the municipality to reduce the use of plastic

May 13 from 2021 - 11: 12

The circle of podem Dénia has sent a letter to the supermarkets of the municipality in order to ask them to join the effort to reduce single-use plastics from products for sale, in order to meet the objectives of the European Plastics Pact, reduce waste and protect environment. Likewise, it will also ask the City Council about the management and treatment of plastics that is carried out from the council and the amounts of plastic that are recycled in the town.

The members of Podem in the municipality want to challenge the commercial areas so that they are an active part of the change and implement measures to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics as much as possible.

Spain signed in March 2020 the European Plastics Pact together with a dozen EU countries and about a hundred private organizations, with the aim of promoting the elimination of plastics, reducing their unnecessary use and carrying out efforts to recycling, reuse and progress towards a circular economy, with measurable objectives and the 2025 limit so that all single-use plastics marketed in the signatory countries are 100% recyclable, in order to comply with the European directive on plastics approved two years ago.

"Our training has been involved in this effort to limit single-use plastics since its inception, serve as an example the bill presented to Congress in June 2018, aimed at reducing the consumption of single-use plastics; or the Promotion of the Law of Waste Prevention and Circular Economy that is being processed in the Generalitat Valenciana, presented at the end of 2020 by the Consell and waiting for it to be sanctioned by Les Corts ", they report from the circle.

Likewise, "at the national level, the processing of the preliminary draft of the Waste Law has already begun, where the European directive on plastics will be transposed, which will introduce tools such as extended producer responsibility, in order to hold manufacturers and distributors responsible for the waste derived from their products through return, deposit and return systems. In this case, from Podemos, we hope that after the approval of the law, the production companies will finance these systems and not the administration, as they currently intend.

In this sense, from Podem they urge the Dénia Government team to start studying some of the initiatives that the Valencian Law will contemplate, such as the installation of packaging return machines.

"In short, from the bases of Podem Dénia we consider that it is necessary to carry out actions aimed at raising awareness among citizens and different social agents of the need to move towards a future free of single-use plastics, where recycling and reuse are part of everyday life ", they conclude from training.
