"Absolute refusal" from the fishermen's collective to oil prospecting on our coastline

February 14 from 2014 - 00: 02

The Fishermen of Dénia, Xàbia and they have shown Calp "flat refusal" the oil exploration project in the Mediterranean that seeks to make a business this year between the Balearic Islands and the mainland. So they passed after the talk given by José Ortega, a lawyer for the Interfederativa Commission of Fishermen of Valencia which took place in Denia fish market.

Juan Antonio Sepulcre, president of the Brotherhood of Denia, explained that this project "It will not leave money in the country and will only bring badly. In 3 months, everything that we have been preserving for years will make it tobacco". Sepulcre showed his anger because if this happens, will be affected tourism, "the only sector that has increased revenues in the country".

According to the president of the Brotherhood, these surveys will be for nothing, because "The amount of oil they can extract is minimal, and the benefits will not remain in Spain". Sepulcre announced that the Fishermen's Association of Denia move its complaint to the European Commission Interfederativa hand to make parliament to decide.

What can happen if everything goes ahead

During the conversation the lawyer Ortega, expert knowledge of the subject and of the Coastal Act, explained the consequences it may have for our waters: there will be massive fish kill, but injuries of all kinds in auditory organs, reactions of flight or noise stress or damage to the eggs and larvae of fish, among other things.

Studied to the smallest detail the environmental impact presented by the company, much uncertainty emerges because there is no sign of certainty as to what will happen. Based on precisely this lack of knowledge about the arguments which it is based, since they have no practical experience of what has happened in the seas where they have worked like Norway and Greenland.

The Interfederativa Commission of Fishermen of Valencia is not alone in this fight, because it has the support of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, who has published a very critical report which claims that the ships would inject sound 259 decibels at sea it would be audible at about 36 km.

But as Ortega said, "This is just a snack" because the real problem would come with the installation of the industry. When you begin drilling the new reality of our waters would be marine pollution, which will form part of the system and will not be an accident. With the deep drilling will reach embolsamientos acidic water will surface beside the tools hydrocarbons, and eventually scattered in the sea.

In addition, the fish will taste and carcinogenic hydrocarbon components "for nothing"Because according to the lawyer, "We will not have a cheaper fuel. It will be sold at market price, the only commitment of the company is to guarantee the supply".

The measures being taken

In order to combat this project, an administrative contentious appeal has been lodged in the Supreme Court against the Royal Decrees of 23 / 12 / 2010, as well as allegations against the environmental impact study, from the Interfederative.

In addition, last week they lodged a complaint in the petitions committee of the European Parliament stating that there has been an infringement of European Union competence in all this process, since this is an exclusive competence in favor of the European Union in matters of Marine biological resources, which are being compromised.

From the Interfederative have proposed to the Fishermen's Guilds that each associate presents the complaint on an individual basis to give political value to this complaint, in addition to providing a motion to the councils that want to adhere to it.

José Ortega insisted on the need to create social awareness as is happening in Ibiza with the movement #Evissaduino, A social conscience that is slowly awakening in the region with similar movements in Dénia and Jávea.

The lawyer recalled that next Saturday 22 of February there is a demonstration summoned throughout the Comunitat in Castellón to protest against oil prospecting in the Gulf of Valencia.

The PSOE proposes an extraordinary plenary to present allegations in time

Socialist spokesman in Dénia, Vicent Grimalt, Announced that they have requested an extraordinary plenary to present joint allegations against the project before the deadlines for submitting allegations are met, since the last day is the 22 of February. According to Grimalt, "It has to be a fight in which we all go together."

Vicent Grimalt also explained that the socialist group in Les Corts will present Friday a Proposition No of Law for Les Corts to pronounce against this project.
