26 October 2020 - 12: 06

The Dénia Health Department has provided care to more than a hundred patients in the Acquired Brain Injury Outpatient Unit since its opening, in October 2019.

The type of patients who have been treated in the Acquired Brain Damage Outpatient Consultation, located at CSI I of Dénia, in La Pedrera, are patients affected by cerebrovascular accidents, serious head injuries and post-infection and tumor brain injuries. The consultation is attended by a multidisciplinary team of specialists in Rehabilitation, therapists specialized in neurological physiotherapy, neurological speech therapists, neuro-psychologists and occupational therapists.

The Acquired Brain Injury Outpatient Unit cares for patients in any of the 4 modalities of therapies that are performed: physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and neuropsychology. Most of them receive between 2 and 3 therapy sessions of each modality. These are individual sessions of 45 minutes that are administered 2, 3 or 5 days per week. The treatments usually last between six months and a year, depending on the medical indication. The treatment guidelines are directed by a specialist in Rehabilitation, who is in charge of supervising, at all times, the evolution of the patient, together with the leading multidisciplinary team in the Valencian Community in the care of this type of patient, Neural.

During the confinement, a virtual consultation was launched for patients with acquired brain damage and their families. Treatment was carried out by tele-rehabilitation or by telephone for those patients who did not have telematic means. According to the Head of the Rehabilitation Service of the Dénia Health Department -DSD-, Álvaro Escuder: “During confinement we have adapted to continue offering an essential service to patients. In addition to telematic therapeutic assistance, we emphasize counseling and help to families. We started an initiative that was very well received: a therapeutic group for emotional support for caregivers, who found themselves overwhelmed by circumstances ".
